Sunday Oct. 7 '17.
It was one hell of a day. Windy and the rain came down in torents [torrents]. We had a sixteen car convoi at 1 P.M. from Bazoches to a village just below the Chemes des Dames, about three miles in back of Selles. It was pitch dark by 5:30 and before we got through Braine, at Chassemy Tedford got stuck in a hole and had to be pulled out. It was so dark that I had to go in second most all the way from

Chassemy on. The only time that I could see the road and the car ahead was when the big guns would flash, and that was frequent enough to follow the road and keep from coliding [colliding] with the car in front of me. The flashes from the guns lit up just like flashes from lightning. There was an insesent [incessant] roar. To make things worse for me my foot brake wasn't working at all. Had my car "on pan" in the morning and got a new front spring put in and my steering gear fixed, but didn't have time to fix the brakes. The only brake I had was the hand

back through Ciruveres, Dommiere, Chaudun, Birzy, Carmelles, Aconin, and on down the valley to Chocrise where we unloaded. At Aconin we passed by a large and beautiful chateau. It was a fine trip, very interesting. It was the longest trip that I have been on, but made good time as it was steady running. This was another time we got the cars ready for inspection and then got stung.
