FEBRUARY-MARCH 1944

27 Sun-1st in Lent. Ember Week Rained quite a bit during day. George & Jimmy went to Loughborough in the ambulance. Went to Sunday School in morning & afternoon. Muriel Yokes came to tea and stayed all the [] Ted Nurmin came in, and Taffy[ also ] brought Stan

28 Mon Rather cold. Snowed & hailed at intervals during the day. Had quite nice lessons at school and had French & Science homework. Had a fire in Lounge and Mrs Vokes & Mrs [Ormbert] came to tea.

29 Tues Nice day. Had a test in cookery and had to write out a time table. Had quite a nice singing lesson and then had to have gym lesson. Got my maths done in my free lesson.

1 March Wed-Ember Day S. David First Quarter 8.40 p.m. Janet & I both had long letters from George. Had a very nice science lesson doing experiments. Daddy saw Hump and spoke to him. Had a lot of homework in evening. Ted came in & brough us an orange each.

MARCH 1944

19 Sun-4th in Lent Went to Sunday School in morning and afterwards went to see Ian who is over. Went to S. School again in afternoon. Revised in evening. Taffy Aurther and two waafs came in in evening. We sang a lot of hymns.

20 Mon-Vernal Equinox Denys Birthday Quite a nice day. Did not have any exams but had ordinary lessons. Revised in History. Then went to cathedral for a rehearsal. Had lessons as usual in the afternoon.

21 Tues Quite a nice day but cold. Had another rehearsal in the morning and had our photos taken. In afternoon the Festival took place, over 1,000 children there. Mummy, Mrs [Lambert] and Ted came. Revised in evening.

22 Wed

Janet had a long letter from George. Had a 2½ hour History Exam in morning which was not too bad and a 2 hr Biology exam in afternoon. Revised English in evening. Ted came in

OCTOBER 1944

19 Thur Had Current Events lesson on our own. History not bad. Did Chemistry in free lesson & then had practical chemistry. Did some theory and some practical Biology in afternoon. Didn't do much homework in evening. Janet & I went for a walk in the dark with Bill & Ted Had some good fun.

Paddy Janets kitten went missing. 20 Fri Did not go to school. Helped Mummy all the morning. Cleaned my bedroom and made some soup. Ted came in afternoon to help Mummy with her bag. Did some history notes in evening. Bill & Ted came to tea. Bill took Janet to the pictures.

21 Sat - s.r. 6.33, s.s. 4.55 Went to Doctor's in morning. He gave me a tonic. Did errands. Ted came in in afternoon, got changed & started an essay on Propaganda. The Constable family came in evening and Bill Jerald David & Colin a P/O came in so we had a party. Had very good fun & one or two sham fights.

It is not too early to commence bastard trenching for such crops as Peas, Beans, Onions, etc. For protection transfer to frames well developed plants of Lettuce and Endive to provide a succession of salads during the winter months.

OCTOBER 1944

26 Thur Lovely day. Had quite a nice current events lesson. Had notes nearly all the time in biology. Only did one experiment. The Archbishop of Canterbury died. Had a lovely bible class in evening. Ted Bill Taffy George Colin and Dave came.

27 Fri Cold day. Didn't get much done in free lessons. Played a rough game of hockey in afternoon and only just caught the bus home. Colin & Dave took Janet & I to the pictures in evening. Betty Ted Bill & Denys came in during the evening.

George's birthday 28 Sat - SS. Simon and Jude Italy invaded Greece, 1940 s.r. 6.46, s.s. 4.41 Rather cold day. Helped Mummy all the morning. Did my bedroom & peeled the potatoes. Had a bath in afternoon & got changed. Bill Taffy & Ted to us to see a play Gaslight It was very good indeed.

Cut down Asparagus when the foliage turns yellow and before the berries drop. Complete the earthing of Celery before frost becomes severe. Endeavour to collect as much suitable material as possible for the compost heap.

JANUARY - FEBRUARY 1944

30 Sun - 4th after Epiphany Went to Sunday School in morning and taught primary. Tried to get to see George in afternoon but bus was packed and went by and we could not get a lift. Wrote an English essay in evening. Taffy came in.

31 Mon - Partridge and Pheasant Shooting ends Janet had a long letter from George. Winnie went back with Daddy in morning. Took a nice science lesson. Had a free French composition which took me most of the evening wrote a letter to George.

1 Feb. Tues- First Quarter 7.8 a.m. Cooked potatoes, carrots and greens in cookery. Voted for house captains at break. Had nice singing lesson and then had to have gym as it rained. Spent most of evening doing geography.

2 Wed-Purification of B.V.M. Candlemas (Scottish Quarter Day) Had a science test first lesson. Read Farmer's Glory in English. Mummy went to see George in afternoon. Did homework all the evening until 10 o'clock.

1945 30 Days NOVEMBER 15 Th Cold day. Had quite a nice music lesson & had a singing rehersal. Did a Southlands College lesson after break 1 1/2 hrs. Enjoyed art in afternoon. Did H.W in evening. Did not go to Bible class. Ron took class.

16 Fri Very cold day. Did french in free lessons + had quite a nice c. events lesson. Did the other Southlands College lesson in morning. Played hockey in afternoon. Well all went to the pictures on camp with Bunty Desmond and Judy [unknown]

17 Sat Very cold day. Cleaned the bathroom and went to Sutton in morning. Had a bath in afternoon. Judy came for weekend. Did homework all the evening.

1945 30 Days NOVEMBER

22 Th Foggy day. Had an amusing music lesson and then we had a singing rehersal. Did french in free lessons. Enjoyed art in afternoon. Spent all evening doing home work. Dennis took Bible class.

23 Fri Cold day. Had a singing practise first two lessons. Did french in all free lessons. Helped to mark the field for hockey in afternoon. Had a party in evening. Judy, Bunty, Desmond Eric & Padre came in. Had a lovely time.

24 Sat Quite a nice day. Had breakfast late and did some homework in morning. After dinner, Eric took Janet, Judy and I to Cambridge by taxi. Did some shopping and came back to Ely & had tea in Bonnets. Afterwards queued for pictures but did not get in so came home at 7.20pm.

Memo

Thurs cont. Padre, leslie, Eric, Desmond, Kitty, Molly, Judy, John, Luther, Jo, Ted, Mr Cotton, Geo Phang came to B class.

1945 31 Days DECEMBER

13 Th Had quite a nice music lesson + then had a lovely time singing carols. Did french in free lessons. Had an enjoyable art lesson Wrote to G. in evening. Ron took bible class. Mr Cotton, Judy, Bunty, Kitty, Darren [?] Ted, Go Cannon[?]

14 Fri - King George VI born 1895 Dull Foggy Day Didn't do much in free lessons. Had quite a nice current events lesson. Went out in d [?] hour with Betty + brought presents for rest of [?] played hockey in afternoon

15 Sat Mild damp day Helped Mummy in morning and went to Sutton and did errands. Had a bath in afternoon and did french homework in afternoon and evening. Noone came in.
