expecting but that we should lose it in doing so but we succeded in doing it we Lay to without a rug of sail on her for about 1 hour when the captain came Deck and ordered the ship put before the wind As the only hope of saving our Masts which we expected to see go over the side every moment seeing that our situation was anything but pleasant for if the gale had of lasted Any length of time at the Rate we were a going we could not run in that Direction Long but Agreeably to our disappointment The gale broke at 7 O clock the next Morning, So that we set maintopsail and fore sail Next stood on the wind gradually the wind abated so that once more we made good Weather of it again

Thursday 9th AM Light winds from W 7 bells in Morning raised Sperm Whale 3 miles of [weather?] Bow lowered all 3 boats and pulled for them We raised 4 Sperm Whale but did not suceed In getting long of them About 3 O clock they returned To the ship after a pull about 30 miles All hands pretty well tuckered Hoisted boats and then for dinner After dinner was over lowered again Black fish Returned to The ship about dark Capt's Boat took one

Wednesday 10th AM No wind until 11 O clock then the[re] was a light breeze from the East 8 O Clock look out aloft reported whale 3 points of weather Bow. Lowered but did not succeed in takeing Any Returned to the ship at 10 O clock PM Winds light from S E

Thursday 11th AM light winds from the N E with light showers of rain PM Whale reported from aloft at 1 O clock Lowered and returned with out success The old man is considerable Riled] ship not kept to suit him
