________ Aster laevis — (vide p. 20) Variety γ The Spm wh I have called A. laevis p. 20. seems to accord well with Aiton. But this much better with Lin —

It is a Questo. with me whether these ought not to be called considered as distinct Species. I will call this a third variety —

γ Lower leaves Sessile, upper leaves sub amplexicaulis These leaves approach to linear —

30) A. foliis lanceolato-linearibus sessilibus, lavibus subserratis pedunculis foliolis subpubulatis

The stem is very slender & very smooth — erect — 4 or 5 feet high. Leaves very smooth. the leaf it self much thinner & smoother than ye other spns. Alternate — The lower leaves sessile — long & narrow. — alternate remote not thick on ye stem. Uper leaves embrace ye stem half way round — wh I should call sub amplexicau= lileus because ye angles do no project round ye stem. The little leaves are broad at ye base — & tapering to a sharp point — very small — Bloss. light blue rays — dark yellow disk — Whipples woodland —

The lower leaves slightly serrated — mostly on one edge —

The embracing leave intire.

31) Sept. 21 Aster Miser? Vide page 35. Deminutive Aster —

The lower leaves are fallen. I am in some doubt about ye form — & whether ya are serrated But according to ye general analogy of ye Asters — ye lower leaves are lanceolate & slightly serrated — The upper leaves are linear, sessile in= tire — very thick.

Stems about a foot & half high, slender some wt hairy — Branches many long, slender — from axila of ye leaves — Little leaves entire, very small — numerous — close — nearly in a tiled form. but some wt erect — pointing upwards.

Leaves of ye stem all reflected back upon ye stem — hanging down close to ye stem. Those now on ye stem linear.

Florets — The flowers are ovate — taking into view ye disk. rays are short — but, in full bloom longer

32) longer yn ye disk — But ye disk is globular. Calix is imbricate & ye leaves erect, some wt las look rising up — ye longest next florets, a little reflected. Rays White. disk yellow, whitish & purple.

It seems to accord pretty well with Lin. Obs. Spt Sp. Pl. But it is not so distinguishable in ye form of ye flowers, as to appear to be a distinguishing Chr. It being one of ye [senally?] Asters — & ye leves nutant — gen. 2 to ye Stalk lead me to think it a miser. But I find many of ye Spm of ye Aster seem so completely to run into one another, yt it is very difficult to arrange them. Some, however, are very distinguishable.

Compare Aiton & Lin. It may possibly prove A. pendulus. I think this must be a N. Species.

The Spec. Chr. accord well, except yt ye small leaves are rather lanceolate yn linear.

It grows tall, but have not observed it more than 5 feet high. It may be a variety

γ Quinque pedulis caulis pur= =puris foliolis lanceolatus Sparsis. The disk rises much,& is yellow — ye rays Blu pur= =plish blue.

Stem very deep reddish purple. Very much branched towards ye top of ye stalk. The leaves are large — The Plant is ye largest Aster I have noticed in this any where

We have another variety Stems green & green on one side & purple on ye other from ye root to ye stem top. Size & habit ye same. The spreading branches
