35) Superantibus It may be only a vari= ety of ye puniceus. The principle difference is — The leaves are nearly oblong — very downy — ye stem covered with distinct short soft hairs.

The leaves are also much larger — very deep green — The appearance of ye plant is yt of a different species — Blos. light blue rays — yellow disk — Grows 5 feet hight — Among Aster puniceus. Now think may be called a variety — Very much branched toward ye top. Moist ground, bushes Ditches — border swamps & wet Meadows.

Aster reflexifolius N Sp— Reflexed leaf-Aster — Vide page 31.

I have supposed this might be ye Aster miser. But I am now

36) now convinced it ought to be describ as a N. Species.

Aster reflexifolius Aster — foliis definis linearibus, sessilibus, reflexis ad caulibus ad caulem; infinis subserratis, margine scabris; ramis penutis? ramis foliolis; multis, minutis, reflexis. caule flexuose, subsre via pi= =loso, paniculatis subrecurvis

This is a very small Aster — The leaves are very narrow, rather fleshy & stiff — reflected back & lay close to ye stem — little leaves all turned back — much branched — little leaves numerous — Blossom rays white, disk Yellow & reddish.

We have 2 Varieties A Bloss: white leaves small B Blos. purplish leaves larger & lineari-lanceolate.

Common among bushes in pastures, in rather dry yn wet ground —

37) Sept. 22 Aster novi-belgii New Holland Aster — The Chr accord well with all ye Books —

It may be a new variety

γ foliis omni subserratis, carno= =sis, caulibus purpuris. New holland fleshy leaved Star wort.

The leaves are of a very pale colour — the lea very smooth — shining — & considerably thick —

Stems deep reddish purple — erect — leaves alternate, rather large — Plant about 2 or 3 feet high a small number of short branches thrown out near to at ye top. Bloss — few but large, forming some wt ye appear of an umbel. Rays long — reddish purple — disk yellow Among bushes in rather moist ground. Aug. Nov.

38) Sept. 22 Solidago Canadensis. Chr. perfectlly accord —

The γ1. variety grows tall 4 or 5 feet high — perhaps 6 —

A Stem is some what hairy towards ye top — ye lower part pretty smoth — Leaves almost smooth — The serrae are few & terminates in one long raceme, or sends off a number of ra= =cemes from ye axilla of ye leaves near ye top — ye lower ones ye longest & gradually shorter terminating in a short one. In moist land about fences. — Or rather ye latter may be ye next variety.

B — Leavs of ye branched mentioned above is much rougher — more serrated — ye raceme equal on every side in length gradually terminating shorter in a kind of conic form. —
