I J. G. Kittredge Jr. do hereby certify that on the twenty eight day of October A.D. 1861, I was travelling with J. P. H. Wentworth Supt. Agent of Indian Affairs of So. District Cal, on official business connected with his office, and that the matter being urgent in order to [illegible] our engagements with the Indians the horses were greatly distressed by the ra[illegible] with which we were obliged to drive, and that one of the

[certificate] Printed and sold by Wm. B. Cooke & Co., Importing and Jobbing Stationers, 624 Montgomery Street, Mongemery Block, San Francisco.

State of California City and County of San Francisco SS. On this Fifteenth day of December A.D. One Thousand, Eight Hundred and Sixty Two before me W. O. Andrews, a Notary Public in and for said city and County, duly commissioned and sworn, personally appeared the within named J. G. Kittredge Jr whose name is subscribed to the annexed Instrument as a party thereto, personally known to me to be the individual described in and who executed the said annexed instrument, and hither said J. G. Kittredge Jr. duly acknowledged to me that he executed the same freely and [illegible] and for the uses and purposes therein mentioned.

OFFICE INDIAN AFFAIRS SOUTHERN DISTRICT, CALIFORNIA San Francisco, July 28th 1863

Hon. [illegible] Dole, Commissioner Indian Affairs Washington, D. C. Sir, I had the honor to acknowledge rec't [receipt] of your letter of the 21st January 1863, in answer to my letter of the 5th Dec 12, submitting estimate for funds for the 1st quarter 1863, and am pleased to learn that a [Remission?] for $9,713.50 has been issued in my favour - I had also received a Tabular Statement of the above together and, in my disbursing of the sums - Permit me today in conclusion that the amt. specified above is very limited for the purposes intended, yet small as it is, (should the Treasury Dept. [insist?] upon the payment of Legal tender at the mint in San Francisco, it will be reduced about one half [illegible] say $4,856.25 for the payment of salaries, and other expenses for the quarter ending March 31, 1863. Very Respectfully, Your Obt. Serve. [?] Wentworth Supt [?] of [?] Cal.
