SPECIAL MIXTURES OF FLOWER SEEDS. Many persons derive pleasure from watching the growth of a varied bed of flowers, entirely out of the usual trim garden style, while others desire a much more extended collection than their means will permit. To both of these classes the following special mixtures will appeal: INTERNATIONAL NOVELTIES MIXED.--Each year we make a grand test of floral novelties, obtaining seed therefor from all parts of the world, and our trial fields exhibit a truly magnificent display of flowers never before grown here. A few of the new varieties did not do well with us, but they may prove valuable in other climates or on different soils, but by far the larger number are valuable acquisitions, and we would like to have all our customers try them. We have saved seed of most of the varieties, but instead of listing them in our catalogue separately at ten cents to twenty-five cents per packet, we have decided to mix them all together and offer our customers this grand assortment at the low price of 10c. per pkt., 3 pkts. 25c.

Planted in a section of the garden, this will furnish a constant supply of cut flowers. Pkt. 10c. LOW-GROWING ANNUALS.--This mixture contains seeds of a great variety of low-growing annuals, few of which exceed four to six inches in height, and which, sown in beds or borders, present the appearance of Turkish rugs, carpeting the ground in their wide range of colorings and forms. Pkt. 10c. MIXTURE OF FRAGRANT ANNUALS.--Carefully made up from seeds of fragrant flowers only. A bed of these will give rich perfume throughout the day and evening, while some of them are also suitable for cutting. Pkt. 10c. FLOWER BULBS. Many of the most showy, attractive, inexpensive and easiest grown of all summer and autumn flowers are contained in this important class. There are scarcely any other flowers that can compare with the noble and brilliant spikes of the gladiolus, the grace and elegance of the lily, the purity and sweetness of the tuberose, the majestic foliage of the caladium, and the wonderful markings of the tigridia. Bulbs for spring planting require scarcely any care, and quickly make a gorgeous display, while the bulbs can be kept over winter, and will year after year continue to return a hundredfold in beauty and satisfaction the trifling expense of the original cost. In the following list we have selected the varieties which we believe will give our customers the best satisfaction. The bulbs are large and strong, and will be sent well packed, postpaid on receipt of price, except where noted. Our bulbs are extra nice this year and prices are low. We trust all who have a flower garden will include some of these bulbs in their order.

TUBEROUS ROOTED BEGONIAS.--Of all the introductions of recent years, none have received a heartier welcome than the giant-flowered, tuberous-rooted begonias, which have been brought to wonderful perfection. These flowers sometimes grow six inches in diameter are borne upright on stiff stems, and outrival in colors the most brilliant or dazzling geranium. We have had many of these flowers grown in an ordinary way that measured four and one-half inches in diameter. They are of the richest colors, embracing every shade of white, rose, pink, red, scarlet, crimson, maroon, lake, yellow and orange, and combine the richest shades. Tuberous begonias are well adapted to house culture, and make splendid beds on the lawn. The bulbs can be taken up and kept in a dry warm place through the winter as easily as a potato. The petals are broad and pure white, with a deep reddish purple stripe down the center of the outside of each, showing through faintly on the inside. Perfectly hardy, the stem dying down every autumn, but growing again so rapidly as to completely cover any trellis or arbor very early in the season. It is propagated from small bulblets, which will make from ten to twenty feet of vine, and with its beautiful heart-shaped leaves, bright green, peculiar foliage and clusters of delicate white flowers sending forth a delicious cinnamon odor, render it one of the most desirable climbers in cultivation. We can furnish the large tubers by mail, postpaid, for 10c, 3 for 25c; bulblets, 4 for 10c, doz. 25c.

[image] LILY OF THE VALLEY.

KAEMPFERI.--Marvels of beauty and statliness [stateliness]. Think of a plant sending up to the height of three feet a dozen flower spikes, each spike bearing two to four blossoms eight or ten inches across, and of the most delicate and beautiful colors, markings and combinations. Think of a bed of all colors--white, indigo, violet, lavender, mauve, sky blue, royal purple, blush, yellow, etc. Your imagination can conceive of nothing grander, and they are even more grand and beautiful than your imagination can portray. Such are these new Kaempferi Iris, the king of hardy perennial plants. Once planted in your garden they are a joy for a lifetime, blooming profusely in June and July. Either double or single, mixed. Each 15c, 2 for 25c, doz. $1.25. GERMAN.--The true "Fleur-de-Lis," the national flower of France; perfectly hardy, grow and bloom luxuriantly anywhere, particularly in moist situations. Plants well established produce from 50 to 100 spikes of bloom, deliciously fragrant and fine for cutting. In beauty, flowers rival the finest orchids. LILY OF THE VALLEY. Well known and universally admired spring flowering plants, equally well adapted to winter flowering in parlor or conservatory. Flowers bell-shaped, freely produced and powerfully fragrant. To grow in open ground, select a partly shaded, rather moist situation and they are charming when grown in large patches, as their handsome green leaves and lovely sprays of flowers make a beautiful effect together. When once planted and established the crowns increase in number and the larger ones flower each year without attention. These dormant roots can be potted at any time; put six pips in a 4-inch pot, place in a cool situation until wanted for blooming, then bring out to light and warmth; give plenty of water. Each 5c, 3 for 12c, doz. 40c.

DAHLIAS. When well grown the Dahlia is one of the most handsome flowers in the whole list, and especially those of the newer varieties, such as we offer. They are of sturdy growth and covered with hundreds of flowers. The secret of success in growing them lies in having a good, deep, mellow soil, deeply spaded and thoroughly enriched with well-rotted manure. During hot, dry weather we always give them an abundance of water, on the plant as well as at the roots. Sprinkling the foliage daily tends to a vigorous, healthy growth. Always put a strong stake by each plant and tie the plant. They well repay a little care and each plant will be a specimen to be proud of. Don't fail to try a few. There is such an endless variety that we think it best to describe only a few sorts. Our mixture contains about 100 choice varieties. We have a large collection of these exceedingly showy and grand fall flowers, and can furnish almost any color desired. They comprise all the most gorgeous shades imaginable. At prices named we send strong, dry roots, as we do not think the young pot plants at all desirable for sending by mail, though they can be grown at one-fourth the cost. Yellow Beauty--A clear double yellow flower of beautiful shape and is greatly admired on our grounds. Each, 25c; per doz. $2.25.

[image] DOUBLE DAHLIA.

CHOICE GLADIOLUS. These are a specialty with us, aud our fields devoted to them make a most magnificent sight each year, appearing at a distance a mass of bright colors. We grow the largest number and the largest variety to be found in this part of the country. It is the most desirable of all bulbs, and claimed by many who are well acquainted with their varied beauty to be the flower of flowers. Our bulbs will produce immense spikes of bloom. Gladiolus are of very easy culture, and to have a constant succession of flowers the bulbs should be planted at intervals from the middle of April until the first of July. We have greatly reduced our price this year to induce all to try our superb varieties. The bulb, or corm, is usually very large, producing a strong, stiff flower stalk about three feet high. The flower spike is very long and well filled out on all sides. [image] LEMON LILY.

LILIES. No class of plants capable of being cultivated out of doors possess so many charms; rich and varied in color, stately and handsome in habit, profuse in variety, and of delicious fragrance, they stand prominently out from all other hardy plants. They thrive best in dry, rich soil, where water will not stand in winter. After planting they require very little care and should not be disturbed for several years, as established plants bloom more freely than if taken up annually. CORAL LILY.--Of all dwarf-growing lilies, the Siberian Coral lily (Lilium tennifolium) is undoubtedly the most brilliant and beautiful. The flowers are a brilliant crimson--the brightest shade imaginable--and so graceful and refined in form as to make this the most captivating of all the lilies. The flowers have a peculiar waxy or coral-like appearance, quite distinct from all other flowers. The bulbs are about the size of a walnut and produce slender stems about eighteen inches in height, bearing beautiful heads of flowers as shown in the engraving. It is perfectly hardy, and fine for clumps and masses out doors. We can offer fine home-grown bulbs this season at a reasonable price. All should have this most elegant flower. Each 20c, 3 for 50c, doz. $1.75. CANDIDUM.--The pure white garden or Easter lily; flowers snow white with heavy, yellow stamens; hardy and free blooming, bearing five to twenty blossoms. Plant early and leave undisturbed. Each 10c, 3 for 25c. AURATUM, OR JAPANESE GOLD BANDED LILY.--This is justly entitled to the name often given it--The Queen of Lilies--and it is decidedly the most beautiful of all lilies. The immense flowers are deliciously fragrant. The large white petals are thickly spotted with chocolate crimson, and have a bright golden yellow band through the center of each. This magnificent lily succeeds well everywhere. Each 25c, 3 for 60c. SPECIOSUM ALBUM.--Large, pure white flowers of great substance, beautifully recurved. For garden or pot culture. Each 20c, 3 for 50c.

SPECIOSUM ROSEUM.--Pure white ground, stained and spotted rose, similar to Speciosum Album, except in color; very beautiful. Each 15c, 3 for 40c. ELEGANS, OR THUNBERGIANUM.--Early; flowers cup-shaped, borne upright, and of a great variety of colors. They are very effective planted either in lines or clumps, and include many showy sorts. They are the finest lilies for house culture and are largely in use for winter forcing. Each 20c, 3 for 50c.

LEMON LILY.--One of the handsomest flowers for garden culture. It is not a true lily as the bulb is of different shape, but the flower is very much like the Lilium Speciosum in form and about 3 inches in diameter. The color is entirely different from all other sorts, being a clear lemon yellow of very bright pleasing appearance. They have also a most delightful lemon fragrance. There seems to be almost no limit to the amount of bloom produced, each flower stem bearing 7 to 20 flowers. It is sure to bloom the first season and is the flower for everyone. Each 25c, 3 for 60c.

[image] SPOTTED CALLA.

LITTLE GEM CALLA.--This beautiful little floral gem originated in the Guernsey Islands, and is one of the finest novelties offered in years. It is in appearance a true miniature specimen of the old Calla, rarely growing over 10 to 12 inches high and commences to bloom when 6 to 8 inches. Blooms much more freely than the old Calla, in fact, continues to flower nearly the whole year. A California correspondent writes: "On my grounds, where it has been growing for the past two years, in rich, moist ground, where the common Calla grows to the height of three feet, the Little Gem has never attained a greater height than 10 to 15 inches and is almost constantly in bloom." Each 30c, 3 for 75c. SPOTTED CALLA.--Leaves are deep green, with numerous white spots, which give the plant a magnificent appearance. They grow freely in any soil. Can be planted out in the spring like a gladiolus, and blooms well during the summer. The flowers are pure white with a black center, and are very beautiful. Each 15c, 3 for 40c. ZEPHYRANTHES.--Popularly known as "Zephyr Flowers" and "Flowers of the West Wind." They are among our most beautiful dwarf bulbous plants, very effective for planting out in masses in May, flowering with great profusion during the summer. Very suitable for pot culture; 6 to 12 bulbs clustered in a 6-inch pot in fall will give a fine display during winter; pink and white. Each 10c, 3 for 25c.
