SPRAYING PUMPS. It does pay to spray; there can be no question as to it, as thousands of experiments in all parts of the country have proven, and it seems to be the only effective method of destroying insects, and fungus growth like rot and mildew. SPRAYING PUMP No. 2.--Is constructed on the most approved plan. It is double acting, so that it will throw a continuous stream. It has a patent submerged cylinder, expansion rubber bucket and a large air chamber to cushion the stroke. It is provided with two discharge ports, one or both of which can be used for spraying. The base is properly shaped to fasten either to the staves or head of barrel. As will be noticed it has a strong leverage, so that it is easy to operate and will throw a solid stream 60 feet from the nozzle, or will throw a spray fine as mist over an ordinary fruit tree. It has steel pins, brass plunger cylinder and brass-lined lower cylinder. There is a strainer on the suction pipe and a good agitator beside the suction pipe which keeps the spraying mixture thoroughly and constantly stirred. With this outfit there is sent two five-foot lengths of hose and two spraying nozzles of the best pattern. It is all complete as shown in cut, except the barrel (we do not furnish barrels with any of the pumps). Price, $11.50.

[image] NO. 2 SPRAYING PUMP, $11.50.

It has also an agitator to keep the solution thoroughly stirred. Price very low, $5.00. SPRAYING PUMP No. 4.--A cheap pump, spray or solid stream. We sell a great many of these for spraying fruit plants, washing windows, etc., and they give good satisfaction. Price, $1.50.

IOWA SEED COMPANY, DES MOINES, IOWA. 85.

TOOLS AND IMPLEMENTS. We handle a good assortment of the best gardening implements and tools, and, as we are not bound to any firm or manufacturer to push their goods exclusively, our customers can depend on our opinion as here given, being unbiased and founded on our own experience and that of the best gardeners near this city. A good wheel hoe is as much superior to the common hoe for cultivating a garden as is the mowing machine to the sickle in the hay field. All of the following tools have been thoroughly tested, and for their own particular class of work have given splendid satisfaction. The soil on which they are intended to be used, as well as the use to which you intend to put them, must be well considered.

WE ARE GENERAL AGENTS IN IOWA For the Celebrated Planet Jr. Tools. And as we handle more of them than any other firm and pay spot cash, we can make lower prices. If two or more are wanted write for special discounts.

PLANET JR. HILL DROPPING GARDEN DRILL.--The latest and best of the "Planet Jr." family. It holds two quarts, and sows all kinds of garden seed with the greatest regularity. The plow runs any depth from one-eighth to two inches. It sows in drills and will also drop in neat hills either four, six, eight or twelve inches apart. It can be changed from a hill to a drill dropping machine, or can be thrown in or out of gear in a moment, and will not sow when run backwards. It has a force-feed, so that the sowing is regular, no matter whether the drill is full or nearly empty. The discharge of the seed can be stopped instantly at the end of the row, so that none need be wasted. The Opening Plow and Coverer are specially adapted for the work they have to do, while the marker can be set at any distance desired up to twenty inches. The ability to drop in hills is a great advantage, as it saves considerable seed, insures vigorous plants at even distances, and saves an immense amount of hand labor in thinning out. The machine is thoroughly well made and is one of the best tools on the market. List price, $12.00. Our price only $9.00. Extra attachment for sowing onion seed for sets in a band four inches wide, 50 cents. PLANET JR. SINGLE WHEEL HOE.--This Single Wheel Hoe is considerably lighter than the double, and does almost the same variety of work; the attachments are nearly identical. Owing to its lightness, it is more pleasant to some than the Double-Wheel Hoe. Though intended chiefly to work between the rows, it can be used to hoe both sides at once, while plants are small, by placing the wheel to one side of frame. List price, $6.00. Our price only $4.75. PLANET JR. PLAIN SINGLE WHEEL HOE.--Has only one pair of hoes, but the other attachments may be added later if desired. It is cheap and will be a popular tool. Our price only $3.15.

5 Per Cent Discount On two or more machines ordered to be shipped together.

[image] HILL DROPPING DRILL.

THE PLANET JR. COMBINED DRILL, WHEEL HOE CULTIVATOR AND PLOW.--This is the most popular tool we have ever sold. As a Plow it opens furrows, covers them, hills, plows to and from, etc. As a Hoe it works safely to and from both sides of the row at once, or between rows, working all rows from eight to sixteen inches wide at one passage. As a Cultivator it is admirably adapted to deep mellowing of the soil. It sows all garden seed accurately at the desired depth, opening, covering, rolling down and marking the next row all at one passage, in the most reliable and perfect manner. Each machine is sent out with the tools shown in the cut. We take pleasure in selling this machine, as it is sure to please everyone who tries it. You will be surprised at the great amount of work it will save you. Even if you have only one acre of ground in garden crops it will more than pay for itself the first season. Manufacturers list price, $12.00. Usual wholesale price to dealers, $9.00, but we purchased a large number for spot cash so that we could offer them to our customers for $8.50 net cash. Don't fail to include one in your order, as you may never have an opportunity to buy for this price again. Order early.

Large Illustrated Catalogue of PLANET JR. TOOLS Mailed free to any address.

THE "PLANET JR." DOUBLE WHEEL HOE, Cultivator, Rake and Plow Combined.--This popular hoe merits the thorough admiration of every practical gardener. Each tool is sent out with the attachment shown in cut. The arch is high enough to enable the operator to work both sides of the row at once until plants are over eighteen inches high; then the wheels can be set to run close together and work between the rows. Leaf guards (detachable) go with each machine, to be used when plants extend into a wide row. This tool is light, very simple, very strong, made of the best material and highly finished, and nothing exceeds the variety and perfection of work it performs. It will do the work of six men with ordinary hand hoes. List price, $8.00. Our price only $6.00 each. THE PLANET JR. PLAIN DOUBLE WHEEL HOE.--This machine is the same as the machine just described, except that it has no attachments except one pair of hoes. It is just the thing for onion growers and others who want a hoe only, and at a small cost. Price, $4.00. THE "FIRE FLY" SINGLE WHEEL HOE, Cultivator and Plow Combined.--This convenient tool combines lightness and strength with great adjustability, while its highly polished and tempered tools make gardening comparatively a pleasure. The tools are all made after the most perfect models, and are: First, a pair of admirable Hoes, which can be set to work to and from the row, and to any desired depth. Next, a set of three reversible Cultivator Teeth, to be used together or singly, or in conjunction with the hoes. Third, a large excellent garden plow. The whole tool is light and strong, attractive in appearance and capable of standing hard usage for years, while the price is its final recommendation. Price, $5.00, boxed. Our net price only $4.00.

86. SEED CATALOGUE AND GARDEN GUIDE.

[image] AS A CULTIVATOR AS A HOE MCGEE GARDEN CULTIVATOR.

PLANET JR. No. 6 COMBINED HORSE HOE AND CULTIVATOR.--This well known and popular tool, though acknowledged for years past to be the best in the market, has striking improvements now. Chief among these are the lever wheel, a necessity for particular work; the patent lever expander, changing the width instantly; and handle adjustment for height, and also sidewise for use in grapes, pole beans, blackberries, nursery stock, etc., and when covering. It also has the patent parallel frame, interchangeable and adjustable hollow steel standards, reversible blades, sleeved bolt holes, etc. As a horse hoe, with the side teeth reversed, it cuts close to the row without injury to the roots, leaving but little and in many cases nothing for the hand hoe. As a cultivator, the reversible teeth cut off and turn over the weeds in the most perfect style. As a hiller, the side teeth work in combination with the rear shovel to perfection. List price, $12.00. Our net price is only $8.00. Extra attachments: Furrowing steel, $1.75; marking attachment, $2.00; covering roller, $1.75; 8-inch sweeps, 35c. each; 10-inch, 40c; 12-inch, 45c; 15-inch, 50c.

[image] MATTHEWS' SEED DRILL.

THE PLANET JR. TWELVE-TOOTH HARROW, CULTIVATOR AND PULVERIZER.--For fine cultivation, either deep or shallow, this has no equal. The recurved throat and high frame prevents clogging, and the reverse position is given to the teeth in a short time by changing a single bolt in each. It is provided with a new lever wheel, used to regulate the depth with exactness; also with a pulverizer, which leaves the ground in the finest possible condition. The pulverizer is controlled by a lever that can be operated in an instant by the foot while in motion. The pulverizer may be reduced in width by taking off the outside teeth, and the tool may be used to stradle [straddle] a row, cultivating both sides at once. As a harrow, the work done is most perfect, and with the teeth turned backward it is admirable for trashy ground and leveling, and for crops just breaking through the surface. Weight, packed, 60 lbs. Price complete, $12.50. Our price only $8.50; without pulverizer $8.00. PLANET JR. NO. 2 SEED DRILL.--Similar to but larger than Planet Jr. Combined Drill, holding 2 1/2 qts. List price, $9.00. Our price $7.20.

[image] PLANET JR. TWELVE-TOOTH HARROW AND PULVERIZER.

McGEE GARDEN CULTIVATOR OR SPRING HOE.--The invention of a practical onion raiser, who knew just what was wanted and how to make it. It has two wheels connected by an arch attached to frames by a lateral spring, enabling the user to almost "finger-weed" the crop, as the machine is under such complete control. Onion growers claim this is the best cultivator for onions. With each tool there is a pair of knives, that operate as hoes, and a pair of cultivators. These attach to the beam by means of an eye bolt, and are adjusted forward and backward on the beam to any angle with the plants or to any angle with the surface of the ground. The adjustment to and from the row is accomplished instantly by means of the springs, which at the same time keep the knives or cultivators under control and protect the plants. For years there has been no tool placed on the market so admirably adapted for the purpose intended. List price, $6.00. Our price only $4.40.

[image] FIREFLY GARDEN PLOW.

FIREFLY WHEEL GARDEN PLOW.--Makes the care of a vegetable garden a pleasure, and 10,000 families who could not find time to keep a garden, if attempting its cultivation with an ordinary hand hoe, can raise their own vegetables successfully with the Firefly. Will both plow the garden and attend to the cultivating and weeding throughout the gardening season. The moldboard is tempered and polished steel. Price, only $2.25. MATTHEWS' DRILL.--This is the old original Matthews, and in our opinion, the most perfect of all. We have used these drills for about ten years on our seed farms, and although we have all the new makes, we prefer this. It is of especial value in sowing beet, parsnip and other difficult seeds, and our men claim they can do far more work in a day with it than with any other. The only objection to it is that it is not advertised and the gardeners do not know of it, thus making it difficult to sell. But when there is one in a locality others are sure to order. When in operation, it opens the furrow, drops the seed accurately at the desired depth, covers it and lightly rolls the earth down over it, and at the same time marks the next row, all of which is done with mechanical precision, by simply propelling the drill forward. The agitator stirs the seed in the hopper thoroughly by a positive motion, which insures continuous and uniform delivery, and the bottom of the hopper is made sufficiently dishing to sow the smallest quantity of seed. When desired, the movement of the agitator can be checked, and the drill may then be propelled forward or backward without dropping seed. There is also an ingenions device just added by which the seed can be cut off while turning at the ends of rows, thus saving quite a percentage of seed. A simple contrivance accurately gauges a uniform deposit of the seed to any required depth, thus avoiding the risk of planting at irregular depths, or so deep in places as to destroy the seed. List price, $12.00. Our price only $8.50.

[image] PLANET JR. NO. 6 HORSE HOE.

LANG'S HAND WEEDER.--It is, in our opinion, the best weeder made. It's special advantages over all other weeders of this class is that it has a band which passes over the fingers, which, when the tool is not in use, gives full use to the hand for pulling weeds and thinning out plants without laying down the tool. It is neatly and strongly made. Price 25c; $2.50 per doz. or postpaid for 30c each. HAZELTINE'S WEEDER.--One hour's use will repay its cost, and in any vegetable or flower garden it is simply indispensable. Its price, 35c prepaid, is not one-tenth its value for one season's use. Blade is solid steel, oil tempered and has five sharp edges. Price 30c; $3.25 per doz. or postpaid for 35c each.

Money Saved! A Plant Jr. Combined Drill, Wheel Hoe, Cultivator and Plow only $8.50.

IOWA SEED COMPANY, DES MOINES, IOWA. 87.

COLUMBIA LAWN MOWER.--Lawn mowers have always been too high in price, and, as a consequence, it has kept down the sale, but we have finally succeeded in having a lawn mower made for us at a heretofore unheard-of figure and we propose to give our customers the benefit. The connecting bar of this mower is a 5/8 cold drawn steel shaft, fastened on the inside of disc with tempered steel set-screws; this, with a cutter bar fastened into the mower in the best possible way, makes it strong and rigid. The reel runs in long polished brass boxes, adjusted by a single screw at each end. The best tempered steel is used, and bearings are adjustable, compensating for all wear. The best malleable iron is used in the roller arms and reel spiders. Instead of a ratchet, we use a clutch that is positively noiseless, on which there is no wear, as it is either fully engaged or entirely out of the way; the clutch is engaged by the forward motion of the drivers only--no springs or extra pieces to wear out or get lost. It has a floating handle that is quickly adjusted for a child or tall person, or for cutting down a terrace, simply by a thumb-nut acting on a notched clamp on the handle and handle irons. A 14-inch mower for only $3.85, or one cutting a 16-inch swath for only $4.10. CHILDREN'S GARDENING SETS.--Give your boys and girls a garden. Provide a means of healthy exercise and recreation and you will certainly be surprised at the enthusiasm and love of nature which is aroused by daily work among the plants, from the first preparing of the ground and sowing the seed, through the weeks of watching, the growth and cultivating until the harvest. To encourage gardening for the young, we offer these sets at low prices. They are also nice tools for ladies to use in the flower garden. Purchaser pays the express charges on all of these. PHILADELPHIA POULTRY MARKER. When hatching chicks from several yards it is of great importance to mark them so you may know exactly from which yard they are bred. WILSON'S BONE MILL No. 1.--One of the greatest conveniences about a poultry house is one of these mills. Not only will they grind shell and bone, but are also just the thing to crack wheat or corn for little chicks, grind charcoal to mix with soft feed; grind up dry bread crusts, etc., making fine feed for the little chicks. Price, $5.00. Our price, ONLY $4.50. NEST EGG GOURD SEED.--Produce hundreds of white gourds closely resembling eggs in size, color and shape. Should be grown by all poultry men. Price, per pkt. 5c; oz. 25c. IMPROVED MOISTURE GUAGE [GAUGE].--Best thing we have seen to regulate the moisture in incubators. It does the work to a nicety. Price, $1.00, or by mail for $1.20. IMPROVED OLENTANGY BROODER.--This is a great improvement and is larger than the old style, having a capacity of 120 chicks. We have thoroughly tested these and believe them to be the best brooder made. Is much preferable to have a hen for raising chicks even where the hens do the hatching. It will pay western breeders to order from Des Moines and save heavy eastern freights. Price, only $6.00 on cars here. TESTED THERMOMETERS.--Manufactured expressly for incubators. They are very sensitive and accurate and have been tested. We take great pains in packing to avoid breakage, but customers must assume risk of breakage in transit. INCUBATORS. It is the most important thing with poultry breeders to have a perfect incubator, and we have been studying this subject carefully for five years and examined about fifty different makes of incubators, many of which were positively worthless. We can most highly recommend the Improved Monitor, which has been a standard for years, and the Successful. It will not pay you to buy a cheap machine as it is sure to prove expensive in the long run. Ask for descriptive circulars of these machines and tell us just what you want and perhaps we can help you in planning. Price of either the Successful or Improved Monitor, 100 egg capacity, $25.00; 200 egg, $35.00. We will furnish you prices on other sizes on application.
