74. SEED CATALOGUE AND GARDEN GUIDE.

[image] TRIFOLIATE ORANGE.

TRIFOLIATE ORANGE. The most hardy of the orange family, and will stand our northern climate with little or no protection, and is also desirable for pot culture. In the parks of both New York and Philadelphia it is growing luxuriantly, blooming and fruiting profusely. It is dwarf, of a low shrubby growth, with beautiful, trifoliate, glossy green leaves, and an abundance of large, white, sweet-scented blossoms, borne almost continually. The fruit is small, bright orange red in color, having a peculiar pleasant flavor. The fine appearance of the plant, with its constant habit of blooming and showy fruit, combine to make it a plant of peculiar value and beauty. Each 25c.

NASTURTIUM. DARKNESS.--A charming novelty, similar to the common nasturtium in habit, but the flower is as double as a rose, and of a dark mahogany red or black. Very handsome and is a constant bloomer, but bears no seed. Each 25c.

MYOSOTIS, (Forget-Me-Not.) A charming, constant blooming plant, requiring plenty of water and partially shaded situations. Valuable for cut flower purposes. Each 10c.

MEXICAN PRIMROSE. Is a perpetual bloomer, in flower at all times of the year, a good specimen showing always from ten to thirty large saucer-shaped blossoms, two to three inches across, of several beautiful colors. Each blossom keeps perfect many days before fading, and when it droops others are out to take its place, and this succession of beauty is continued from one year's end to another. The plant is a free grower, succeeding in almost any soil or situation. As a window plant it combines great hardiness and ease of culture with delicate beauty. In the open ground it grows freely and profusely all summer and, in fact, until winter is upon it. It is a plant whose merits of hardiness, ease of culture, perpetual freedom of bloom and beauty, both in color and habit, will make it popular everywhere. Each 10c.

[image] STAPELIA.

WATER HYACINTH. One of the most remarkable, curious and beautiful plants we have ever grown. Instead of growing in soil it floats in the water, which it is enabled to do by means of its curiously inflated leaf stalks, which resemble bladders or balloons, filled with air. A large mass of feathery blue roots grow downward, their ends entering into the soil. It forms a lovely rosette of its curious, shining green leaves, and throws up spikes of the most exquisite flowers imaginable, resembling in form a spike of hyacinth bloom, but as beautiful as many of the choicest and most costly orchids. Each flower is as large or larger than a silver dollar; color a beautiful, soft lilac rose, sparkling as if covered with diamond dust. The upper petal, which is the largest, has a large metallic blue blotch, and in the center of that a small, deep, golden yellow spot. Can be grown in open air in summer and in the window in winter, in anything which will hold water. The most beautiful effect is produced by using a glass vessel of some sort, with shells and white sand so arranged in the bottom as to conceal a small amount of soil. Each 25c.

[image] MEXICAN PRIMROSE.

MARGUERITE DAISY. SINGLE WHITE.--Each 10c. DOUBLE GOLDEN.--Nothing could be more showy than this beautiful new plant, either as a pot plant or bedded out. It might be called the "Shower of Gold," as it is a perfect mass of rich, golden yellow flowers the whole year round. Well grown plants have as many as one hundred and fifty flowers on them at once. Each 10c.

STAPELIA. This is a genus of curious plants, with showy star-shaped flowers, well shown by this illustration; color buff yellow, with maroon markings. They attract much attention on account of the singular appearance of their flower and peculiar odor. From Cape of Good Hope. Pot in rather poor soil and water sparingly. Each 15c.

[image] MUSA ENSETE.

MUSA ENSETE. (Abyssinian Banana.) One of the grandest and most picturesque of the banana family; as a solitary plant or in groups on the lawn, it has a very majestic and tropical effect. Leaves are very long and broad, of a beautiful green with crimson midrib in striking contrast. Attains a height of ten feet the first season. Each $1.00.

PANSIES. These lovely flowers are too well known to need any description. Nothing can be more effective, whether grown in beds, ribbons, groups, or interspersed among other plants in the border. Our plants are strong and well grown from the best seed. CHOICE MIXED.--Doz. 50c. IOWA BEAUTY, IOWA GIANT, TRIMARDEAU AND WHITE.--Any separate colors, per doz. 75c. Royal assortment of 24 best pansy plants for $1.00.

LION'S TAIL. Most valuable plant either for sitting room or conservatory. The spikes are upward of a foot in length and of a most vivid orange color, which, next to blue, is the rarest color among flowers. All lovers of flowers should have one or more of these strangely curious, attractive plants. Each 15c.

[image] LION'S TAIL.

VERBENA. One of the prettiest and most popular of all plants for bedding. We have over 40 varieties, including all the new kinds. It commences to flower and spread from the first day the plants are set, until late in the autumn. Each 10c, doz. 75c.

[image] FOUR GRAND ROSES SUNSET. METEOR MERMET THE BRIDE THE FOUR ROSES SHOWN IN ABOVE ILLUSTRATION FOR ONLY FIFTY CENTS, POSTPAID.

TEA OR MONTHLY ROSES. No flower has attained such popularity the past few years as the rose. Every year we increase our production, but the demand for good roses increases equally as fast, especially for those kinds which recommend themselves by vigorous growth, perfect form, profuse bloom, rich and distinct colors. The Monthly roses are not quite so hardy as the Hybrid Perpetual but bloom more profusely, and are good pot plants as well as good bedders. Very fragrant, and might be called the sweetest of all roses. MADAME HOSTE.--This is an exceedingly beautiful, new, ever-blooming rose, extra large flowers, and superb buds very full and delightfully perfumed; color soft, canary yellow, deepening at center to pure golden yellow, beautifully flushed with pale amber; edges and reverse of petals rich creamy white; has proven excellent for garden culture, also for pots and blooming under glass. Each 10c. SEVEN GRAND ROSES.--See front cover of this catalogue for colored illustrations and descriptions of these queens of the rose family. Empress Augusta Victoria, 25c each, and Champion of the World, 20c, Rainbow, 20c, Dwarf Marechal Neil, 15c, Souvenir de Wooten, 20c, Clothilde Soupert, 15c, and Rosa Wichuriana, 20c. All with a plant of Solanum for $1. METEOR.--A rich, dark, velvety crimson Hybrid Tea; a free bloomer and vigorous grower, showing no tendency to mildew. Does not run single during summer, and as a garden rose it will prove invaluable, and cannot be too highly recommended. Each 15c. MERMET.--One of the finest roses grown. The buds are very large and globular, the petals being recurved and showing to advantage the lovely bright pink of the center, shading into light creamy pink, reminding one of La France in its silvery shading. A strong grower and fine bloomer. Each 15c. THE BRIDE.--This is undoubtedly one of the finest white roses ever offered. The buds are very large and of exquisite form, and the full flower is very double, measuring from 3 1/2 to 4 inches in diameter. The color is a delicate creamy white. The blooms will last in a fresh state, after being cut, longer than any other white variety. Each 15c. SUNSET.--This exquisite orange-yellow variety is one of the finest Tea Roses grown. The flowers are large and double. The exquisite shades of coloring found in this variety can only be compared to the gorgeous colors of a summer sunset; hence the name. It is deliciously fragrant, a strong growing and free flowering variety. Each, 15c. MALMAISON.--Flower extremely large; quartered and double to the center; color flesh white, clear and fresh. Each 10c.

MARECHAL NEIL.--Very bright, rich golden yellow; very large, full and perfect form; of vigorous climbing growth and a free bloomer. This is unquestionably the finest of all Tea roses; truly magnificent. We have seen greenhouses devoted to a single plant of this variety, from which it was not unusual to cut five hundred to two thousand flowers per day. Each 15c.

[image] ETOILE DE LYON.

AMERICAN BEAUTY.--Many of our friends know all about this grand rose and value it accordingly. To others we would say that it is well known as one of the best and most valuable roses, both for garden and house culture. Color rosy crimson, exquisitely shaded and very handsome. CAROLINE TESTOUT.--Large and double; color bright satiny pink, with rosy center; odorous, free flowering. Each 25c. 78. SEED CATALOGUE AND GARDEN GUIDE.

NURSERY DEPARTMENT. Nothing is more healthful than fruit, and nothing more easily grown. Most of our customers can spare room for a small bed of strawberries, a few rows of raspberries, blackberries, or currants or grapes, and what is more delicious than a dish of fresh fruit from your garden, instead of depending upon fruit which has stood in the hot sun all day in a market stall. There is really no comparison in flavor. It is wonderful the amount of fruit which can be grown in a space 30 or 40 feet square, and it costs but little for plants enough to fill it. And then you certainly have room enough for a few fruit trees. It takes no more room or trouble to grow an apple or cherry tree than it does a shade tree, and you will have both shade and fruit. Our stock of all kinds has made a very fair growth the past season, and is in splendid condition, thoroughly acclimated, hardy, strong, well grown, properly labeled, and all will be pleased who order from us. All stock is carefully packed and shipped by express or freight at expense of purchaser unless stated by mail--but the present special rates of express and freight charges are very low. Don't buy of tree peddlers, but send order to us and be sure of getting what you want. TIME OF SHIPMENT. For south of Iowa line we begin shipments March 20th; for Iowa and other states of same latitude about April 10th; for north about April 20th. Send order early so that we can select stock for you and have no delay. DISCOUNTS. On orders amounting to $5 or over you may select stock to the amount of 10 percent extra. Five of any sorts at the ten rate, and fifty at the hundred rate. If you want a large amount send us your list and we will make special prices wherever possible.

APPLES. We grow over one hundred sorts, yet are not always able to supply all kinds called for. But if selections are partly left to us we can always fill the place of any sort we may be out of with others equally as good and ripening at the same season; the same is true of other fruits. Below we give a partial list of our best known varieties, of which we have a large stock.
