Dear Everyone,

Good to talk to you this morning! I got a summer job! This afternoon I talked to Frau und Herr Haupt Stummer (Mr & Mrs Haupt Stummer) and they want me to live outside [?] (I'll have to get Hannah's relative's Salzburg name address) with them in their place (the sm. castle w/ a pool) for all of August & teach their kids (girl-12, boy-14) tennis mainly, and go hiking, swimming, etc. They're really nice people - I felt right at home the minute I met them. Obviously very well to do - Gerhard Doujak said he thinks the man runs the, or one of the, biggest advertising or PR type firms in Austria. I told him I'm interested in advertising and asked if the paintings on the wall were 17th century Dutch (which he collects!) so I think he likes me :). The kids are really cute and well-behaved etc it seems. I'm so happy this is working out! They said they'd speak German with me - they speak it beautifully - no stupid Vienna dialect. From the little time I spent talking to them they seem to remind me of people like the Kings, so now I have June & July to deal with. Tomorrow I'm talking with another lady, so maybe she'll want me for July or something. I'll finish this after I've spoken with her. Oh - I'll need my tennis raquet, tennis clothes (they play every day) and Dick Gould's how to teach tennis book that I have - but if you come you can bring them then. I'll have to practice at Cliveden! The $1 isn't good at all - they asked me what I wanted and I had no idea what to say - so they're giving me what they gave a girl last summer. Only about $300 for the month I amy suggest a more they didn't seem too concerned about the amount. $300 is peanuts it seems but then I don't have any expenses either. The Doujaks took me out to dinner Fri. which was really fun. Gerhard is helping me ship my junk to English which is great cause I won't have to lug my suitcases on the streetcars and I won't have to worry about my German. I have 2 finals tomorrow (German & Music), Art Tues and 2 Eur. papers due Tues also. So this weekend has been kind of busy with the books. Except for German, all my other grades rely 100% on the final which is scary. Some aren't going to be that easy - we'll see how they go though. I just wish I had more time an didnt have them all fall on me at once. Ive really enjoyed and learned a lot from each class though. Any news on schools Lori? If I don't get your care package this week I'll have someone forward it. Maybe the boat sank? Thank you in advance. I'm glad you like the sweater - people here do wear them big. I have a feeling by the time Sept. rolls arond I'll be more than ready to go home, I miss everyone now! But I figure this is the only chance I'll ever have to do something like work in Europe in the sound of music land & Julie Andrews watch out.

Have you seen Ghandi? It's great! E.T. just hit Austria - and aerobics just started about a month ago. I don't know how well that will go over - Austrians dont exercise - just walk their "hot dog" dogs around the park.

Somewhere in Italy by the time you get this!

Hi again. I'm sitting [?] now listening to my Strauss waltzes on the walkman - I'm really becoming cultured aren't I! I talked to the other lady today they haven't made summer plans yet really. We exchanged addresses etc and will keep in touch. I don't like the lady as well as the other family and they speak mainly English at home so I'm not sure about it all. Hopefully in England maybe one of my connections can help me find a "neat job" for 2 months before I go to "where the hills are alive." I've also turned in my U.N. app. My 2 finals today went really well I think. Just one more final & one paper to go. Lots of last minute things to do to - like washing and packing@ Got your letter about Lori & schools today. I think 4 yrs at a prep school is too many - I'm w/Murray, 2 was good for me. Let me know what happens. Glad my pics turned out well - I'll have to wait so long to see them :(. Sorry that my writing is so small. Every time I listen to this waltz music it will bring back lots of memories of whirling around the palace ballroom! Give my best to everyone and pet Trapper for me. Miss you all.

Love, Chrissie :)

Dear Mom,

Just a couple 'housekeeping' notes:

1) If any pictures of the ball I opened turn out well, please send them to me - I'll give one to the Doujaks. I only remember one of Scott & me being taken though - and that was at about 5 am so it probably won't be so hot! A lot of the pics I took might make no ense to all of you - hope they're good though!

2) Have you been able to change my flight home? It has to be done soon, so if you haven't or can't do it, please let me know ASAP!!!

3) Things I need for spring

a) white pants

b) red cotton jacket (needs to be washed & ironed too)

c) khaki shorts

d) a spring sweater if one looks like I'd wear it - I'm 100% sick of the ones I have now

e) red espadrilles

f) a sun dress (yellow one probably unpracticable cause of ironing so striped one better) maybe send me pics too? whatever you think.

g) anything else you think - skirt? T-shirts? (nice ones) I forget when I have!

-I asked Matt (L'Heureut) to call you and come pick the stuff up. If he doesn't call by finals time then you can call him at the Daily (497-2554). Ask him to bring what he can & if it's too much then to give it to someone else going to England if that's possible. If not then I'll do without - whatever works for people there.

4) money matters:

I think I have in my acct. now 142.52 so let's call it $140. I'm going to Germany this weekend - about $50 at least w/skiing - and will be in Vienna until the end of the qtr. - $130 probably or more - esp w/shipping luggage to England. Then 10 dya break - approx $10 day hotel, $10 day food and $100 extra in case, so $300 I'll probably buy an Interail - $200 will be all train & I'll need till end of spring though) so

now +140 weekend -50 Interail -200 Break -300 Other -50 $600

hopefully a high estimate-I have been doing stuff pretty cheaply so far.

So please transfer $500 from money mkt. to checking - I'll record it in my acct. book when I hear you're done it (or been about 1 1/2 weeks approx if I need it before then). I don't know how to handle Cliveden $ yet - I'll talk to Moby this weekend and figure it out.

Well - This was a pretty exciting letter, huh! You could always just bring the clothes when you come visit me - and then take my winter stuff home - hope that trip is in the planning! Take care - love you all. Love, Chrissie :)

Dear Everyone,

Hi! I'm not sure when I last wrote a letter so some of this may be repeat. I got back from Budapest tonight - it was a really good 2 1/2 days we spent there - a lot different than I expected it to be like. I felt like I was in a western country - got no feeling of Russian influence except the big red stars on the impt. state buildings. We didnt get to takl to any Hungarians besides at restaurants etc which is too bad because that would have been the best way to find out more about the country, people, lifestyle etc. We got by fine with our German - not many people spoke English. We did a lot of sightseeing - the big castle area, climbed to the city citadel - Mother Russia statue, went to 2 museums - History of Hungary where we saw the state crown etc, and Fine Arts. Last night we went to a great restaurant - a little place where we stayed hours, sat right next to the band that wore hungarian gypsy outfits and played violins and this wierd instrument where the guy hits these metal wires with things that look like big q-tips! - it was great. They played gypsy music & classic fiddler on the roof etc. - great violin. Had 100% hungarian food and wine etc. - really fun. Today we saw parliment, opera etc and spent the afternoon in a turkish bath - it was quite an experience. The people spoke no german - so lots of sign language. You pay and then wind around this old building that smells steamy and you we got these ugly 50's style bikinis and bathing caps and then shower and go in this big room with a glass dome ceiling and 2 big pools - one is cold and for swimming and one is hot and for relaxing - I took that one - There are about 50 people in the hot one soaking in the mineral water - the one we went to allowed men and women together. 16 of us joined in their pool and got lots of stares when we started babbling english and splashing around. Two stone lions had boiling hot water pouring out of their mouths that massaged your back - felt great! We soaked for about an hour or 1 1/2 and unfortunately there were no massages today. Anyhow - the weekend was really good - walked many miles and saw lots. The town is split into Buda and Pest which I thought was funny. On the train home they check under our seats etc for people sneaking out and under the train even - checked our passports lots. We passed a train that had 27 tanks on it the guards in our car thought it was funny that we were staring at them so much!

Tomorrow I'm meeting the daughter of the Bechtel lady's friend for coffee also I have 2 names how to contact for an internship possibilities who I'm calling tomorrow. I really want to come back to Vienna for summer - I'm sad to be leaving so soon - I only
