did you when you were here? One girl pierced her nose - yuk. I haven't gotten a funky London hair cut or anything yet - just have been shopping once at Flip's, but didn't get anything drastic.

Well it's late and I'm pooped and have to get up & do laundry in the morning before we go to London. Hope mid terms went well. Take care - write when you have time.

Miss you,

Love,

Chrissie :)

Dear Everyone,

I'm sitting on a deck on a boat leaving the island of Mallorca, off the west of Spain, for Barcelona - I'm in shorts and a bathing suit, walkman on, and I'm surrounded by blue water, blue sky and a hot spanish sun - ahhh, I'm set for this 10 hr. ride I think I've sent postcards from various spots on this trip but I'm not sure if I put the right amt. of postage etc on so I'll tell some of it again. We started out 2 weeks ago. We left for Paris on a night ferry and arrived early the next day - the night ferry is a killer for me. We spent one day in Paris only - I want to go back and spend more time there definitely. We went to the Jeu de Paume which was fantastic - all the people I studied last str. I want to learn French - it's such a beautiful language. I couldn't reach Susan H. We left that night of a night train for Nice. We spent 1 night and 2 days there. I liked the city and the beach was beautiful. Next stop was Marseilles for only a couple hrs to make a train connection - I didn't like the city that much. Then it was another night train to Barcelona where we met up w/ Johnny & Ross - 2 other Clivedonites. We stayed in a dive place, but luckily didn't spend much time in the room. Johnny's 100% fluent in spanish which helped - people liked him and were really nice to us. Barcelona is a really big place - a combo of old and new city. The old part reminded me of Italy a lot -

lots of winding back allies etc, falling apart buildings, little hole in the wall shops run by families, laundry hanging out all over etc. We went to a Picasso museum that was fantastic, and walked all over and went to the beach - we went up to a bullfight - those guys didn't have a chance and we watched 6 of them get stabbed times through their brains - pretty gross. Matt thought we were still in France yelled "cafe au lait" instead of ole! Next stop from there was a small place called [P?]. Someone at Cliveden had been there the week before and recommended it to us. Were anyone to see how he heard of it - the train doesn't stop there and it's pretty small. It was great though - we had a place for 2 nights across the street from the ocean. There is a castle on the point and it was basically a tourist summer town that wasn't busy yet so it was mostly the locals and us and some tourists. The people were really nice and went out of their way to please us. From there we left Johnny & Ross and couldn't decide where to go. Originally we'd planned on Portugal and maybe Morocco but once we looked at a map and train schedules we realised that if we went too far south, or to Portugal, It'd take days to get back - Spanish trains aren't the speediest I've been on. Cows run faster. We looked at the map and saw islands sitting off the west and headed for Mallorca, via Valencia. Palma is the big city on Mallorca and as we didn't know much about the island before we left we were set for anything. As it turned out, it was beautiful and we had a great time, but if i were to do it again I

wouldn't go there again. The reason is that it was a vacation place for all of Europe - like Miami or something. We wanted to be more in a really Spanish place but heard more German than Spanish almost. We stayed in Palma one night and saw the town - again a modern part sort off but tons of back roads that cars can barely squeeze down. The next 4 nights we were in a city about 10 or 15 km from Palma called Arenal. It had a 7 km long beach and crystal blue water - it also had 27 discos and countless tourist stands, bars and restaurants. We stayed in a youth hostel that was really nice - 2 blocks from the water - for about $1.75 a night! I toasted both [?] and [?] on their b-days - I'm sorry I didn't call but I was in places where I couldn't very easily and I will tomorrow when we get back to Cliveden. For 2 days we got moped so we got to see other, less touristy parts of the island. It has some really beautiful parts - little caves and bays etc. We cruised all over and spent a day at the prettiest little bay where you could see through the water for feet and walk out really far. It was funny because it was the type place adults go to "get away from it all" vacations and we were there for $1.75 a night! In Paris rooms cost about $10 a night, and we spent about $20 total for 2 weeks!!! We found

a place that made the best hamburgers in the world - Dad you would gone nuts. A little tucked away outdoor cafe place - Don Roco's bar - where a burger w/ salsa, avacado [avocado] cheese, french bread rilled, a beer and fries cost $1.50 - the best! The cooks knew us well and joked us a lot about being americans. We met a bunch of people who pass out tickets to lure you to their disco - by the end we had so many stupid tickets that Suzy and I would go up and offter them to the guys for other discos than their own. The people there don't meet many americans so enjoyed talking to us I think. My major purchase was espadrilles - Suzy and I went nuts while Matt laughed at us in disbelief. I got 4 pair (blue, striped, green, pink) for under $10 though can't beat that! Well our tans are back up to pool - now its back to English rain. I hope it gets nice so i can play some tennis - and a little croquet! This break was a lot different from my last - I don't feel as if I saw as much - It was more of a sun and vaction one than a sight-seeing type. It was great though! I'm not one to complain about running on the beach, sitting in the sun, exploring new towns and cities, strugging w/ language barriers and living cheaply! We were going to go to
