WEDSDAY, SEPT 28

Dear Mother

Just received your letter and postcard today. Glad to hear about the new argyles and especially the Sunday Times. I would appreciate it if you would send up some clippings of the Harvard Game as I would like to see what thr Southland thinks about it. I like the Times sports page a lot better than the Chronicle besides.

Al has seen the track coach (Floch), Ray Dean & varsity coach Jack Weinhouser. He has a meeting tomorrow night about it. He knows that Criley is out for track - also is Bob Mathias. Al sure has changed a lot from being up here only a week. He has a perfect schedule for sports if he can only keep it the rest of the year it will be swell.

Dougie & Corby bought a house out in woodside because of Doug's two more years of school, and it now seems that he might take longer than two.

Thank you for the pictures - I also got another set from Joyce a few days ago.

Please send laundry as soon as possible so that I may send back dirty clothes. I will also send Argyles down because a stitch broke or something.

A lot of people have asked me about (over)

Maynard, Andy and I have just painted our room. Could you make some covers for our sofa? Very important. Please answer. Kirkpatricks gave us a rug. Do your bit. Thanx

my suit (have worn it twice up here now)

Well, bad news. I flunked Chemistry last spring. I got B- in Geology, B in R.O.T.C, A in P.E., C in math and B in foundry.

Now i have Surveying, machine drawing, Calculus, and Enginereing & Physics this quarter. I have classes every afternoon from 1-5 except on Monday and then I have a class from 10-1 & from 3-5. I hash in the mornig from 7-8:45 and get up a 6.

I sure have been having a swell time with Nannie Kirkpatrick. We went up to the city to a place called the Bal Tabarim and saw Ted Lewis. He was really great. The place was packed & we were lucky to get a place to sit down. He did "me & my shadow" and a lot of other famous songs. Last night we went to a dance on campus which had very good music - had a swell time. I had chicken dinner at their house one night and went to a show with their whole family & saw 2 W.C. Fields pictures - funniest things I have seen in a long time. I've played croquet at her house two or three times and she has beaten me three out of four games - but they play under some very schemy rules which I frown upon greatly. Dr. Kirkpatrick tried to teach me horseshoes but I'm not much good at it.

I saw Joyce at the dance - she already knows about a billion people.

Glad to hear Betty studying.

Love, Johnny

Sunday, Dec 7, 1947 Encina Hall, Stanford, Calif.

Dear People:

I should have written before this, but I have been pretty busy. The trip up was fine, and we got here about 8 or 8:30.

Mother: Wes and Dick are not going back down with us. Wes already has his reservation, and Dick has to be down by Friday morn. I would like to work a little time off at the Rest Home. Please write as to what you think.

Dad: I just put that $25 check into my account today. That man who played tennis with you is named (Murray) Rich. In the shop today I found that one of the persons (owner probably) used to play with you. he did not give his name. (I was getting a string fixed. The tennis ladder is set up and I am no. 10, as I expected. i played the no. 5 man two days ago, and the score was 6-2, 2-6, 2-0. We had to stop because of darkness (not challenge match). I broke my string on point set of the first set (I won the point) and from then on used the coaches racket. I could tell that he thought I was playing better, and I know that

I am. Tell Phil that I am looking forward to playing with him. I will be working for Mr. Sorham from 11:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. I wish you could call up Mr Hoves and tell him that I would like to finish my lesson then. Thank you.

Mother: Again about the trip: Please write and tell me what day you are coming up. My Latin Final is on Monday, Nov. 15, and I would like to study some with you before that. (I am going to a formal at Mrs Harkers, Fri., Dec 12.).

Dick Harlan made his letter in Water Polo. Both Dick & Wes have their sweaters now.

The All University & novice fights were very good, they had some very good matches. Mr. Lebendorfer was the announcer.

Wasn't Joe Louises fight something? I am thinking about a New Years party - not for sure yet.

Love to everyone, especially Nana.

Johnny.
