Ibiza, another island but ferry tickets were too expensive. We'll be back in Cliveden after about 1½ days on ferry, train, ferry and train again. I feel so lucky to be doing all of this - when I think of all the things I've done, people I've met, places I've been - the variety, I'm pretty amazed that I've done it. From home - all these places seem so far away and hard to reach but once youre here it's all so easy - just jump on a train and you're there. Traveling w/ Matt and Suzy's been great - they're both really fun and we enjoy the same things. I am anxious in a way, believe it or not, to get back to Cliveden and do some work (I have 2 presentations to give next week - in econ and architecture) and see the places around there. It's all going so quickly, Hannah said she would ask some friends in Germany if they had ideas for July jobs for me - It'd be great if something worked out w/ one of them. One is the Bognor (sp?) lady (I could get some tennis clothes for my Aug. job!), and once again improve my German. At one point in Barcelona we had a real language network going - some Germans spoke to me about the hotel, I

put it into English which Johnny put into Spanish to the hotel owner! - It took a while but the message got across. Barry said he may be able to help me find something for July too. Im having dinner w/ another of Mr. [E?] friends when I get back. I haven't been able to reach the "brilliant bannister [barrister?]" yet. Well I can't wait to see my huge pile of mail from all of you waiting in the "H" box when I get back :). Dad - Im having the worst time thinking of what sort of present to bring back for you - any suggestions? Well - time to do some Econ. reading. For architecture we're going to Cambridge on Fri. which should be fun. Im off. Take care and come visit! Miss you.

Love,

Chrissie :)

Hi again. It's the next day now. When we got to Barcelona last night we found that it was only a sleeping train that cost $45 to paris so we stayed the night in our dive hotel again (where after dinner be found arabs in our beds asleep with the door jammed shut - we crawled in the window and made them find another room - it was interesting). We had a great dinner in Barcelona - the best chicken Ive ever had for about $1.10, and the couple next to us bought our desserts because we'd been talking to

them and had kept asking the waiter the prices of everything and they felt sorry for poor-starving college students or something. They told us there'd been an earthqualke in Calif. and we saw pictures in a Spanish paper this morning but couldn't translate the whole story. I hope all's ok at home. Today our train (10½ hrs) went all through the french countryside and it was incredibly beautiful! So many fields, forests, crops, flowers, little towns stuck in valley etc. - it's funny how you cross a border and the feeling changes so quickly! It all looked so "southern French" and you could just tell the people there were nice - I'd like to speak french and ride a boke through there. Well it's 1am and we'll be at the ferry in an hour 07 50 - I think I'll try to rest for a while. I feel like I've been sitting for so many hrs though! I decided tonight that people who work in the Paris train station are either really nicr to americans or they really hate you and act terrible and not much inbetween. Talk to you tomorrow afternoon

me

Dear all,

Thanks for your Rosebowl letters! I got one Fri and one today - so i guess mail takes 5-7 days. Mail is great. I love mail :) :) :) If you ever feel rich enough to send a care package :) :) :) you cold always put in something like instant & low-cal hot choc. mix that you add water too; or maybe add a long slip of mine for my long dress - I'm not sure if I have one or not but if I dont I can get one here. They have no Tab here but I think that's a little heavy to send! If you have extra room in this package - you could always throw in some gum - it's expensive here. Well - enough hint dropping.

Everything going well here - this city continues to grow on me more every day! Our group of students is really good which is lucky because most people who take German are weird. I'm going to Salzburg this weekend which should be fun, and then the 22nd I may be opening that ball - I'll see Wed when I have dinner w/ the [Doujaks?]. Tomorrow night Im having dinner with Sandi Khaur and her husband & kids - she's the one who worked for the Broadway and is now fashion director of Palmers - a lingery type store here - there is a Palmers whenever I turn a corner here - it's a huge chain. She sounds really nice. I leave for Russia the 30th and come back (hopefully!) the 6th. We go to Leningrad, Moscow and some other city that starts w/ an N - I forgot what it is. It's about $350 total (airfare, hotel, food etc). then I'm also thinking about weekends to Prague, Budapest, Italy, Switzerland etc. Sandi (the Broadway lady) said she tried to get a hold of me Fri to ask me out to their country house for the weekend but couldn't reach me - maybe another time though hopefully! I've been busy ever since we came - I dont remember what I last wrote about. Tonight we went out to a chinese restaurant - it was funny we were in Vienna being americans speaking in German ordering chinese while the menu was ½ in English. The waiter didn't speak German though - only English & Chinese! This weekend we went to Schonbrum - the summer palace which was pretty but must be gorgeous when all the flowers and trees are out. (That's also true of all the parks in Vienna). I went to mass in the Hofburg chapel and heard the Sanger-Knaben - Vienna choir boys. They were great. You can't see them during the service but afterward when they left you could and they're all tiny and adorable - in little blue suits and hats - and boy can they sing. Fri we went to an opera in the main Staatoper hall which is supposed to be the best accoustics in the world probably and saw the magic flute by Mozart. It was pretty, but we had "standing" room seats (cause they only cost 90¢ or something) and after 4 hrs. your legs are ready to die - especially after having walked around the summer palace all afternoon. We'd gone to a huge flea market they have every sat. that morning where they have anything you'd ever want to barer for in your life - mom I bet you'd fine [find] some treasures - from dolls, clothes, jewlry [jewellery], pots n' pans to books, old helmets, opium pipes and old coke signs. Right next to it is the fresh open air market of hundreds of stalls of fruit and vegetables that they have all day every day where ladies take their baskets and do their daily shopping. Speaking of shopping - mom, how much would a nice navy wool coat - long one - cost at home? They have beautiful ones that everyone here wears that are on sale from $70 - $150 or so. Should I invest? They're beautiful but I don't know if its a good deal or not. Let me know. I hate shopping in stores here because you walk in and 5 salespeople pounce on you and I cant even understand what they're saying and they expect you to know what you want before you walk in. Window shopping is evreyones favourite pastime along w/ sitting in cafes and taking their stupid looking Daschund dogs for walks. They look like Irish Setters w/ their legs chopped off. I went to Fiddler on the Roof play last week - I may have told you that though. We started classes today and I just had german. I have art and german tomorrow - we still havent met the infamous

witchy art teacher - she didn't show for our lecture last week. I was in "my" cafe yesterday (we each have to become a regular at a cafe so they bring you what you want w/out your having to order) and the daughter of the waitress/owner came and started babbling German to me - how stupid did I feel not understanding a 6 yr old girl! How did she know all her adjective endings! She asked if I was married or had a child - maybe this cold weather is aging [ageing] me! Her mom explained I was american and wouldn't understand all she said. I felt dumb. By the end of the quarter I'll be able to talk to her hopefully! Boy - in England going out grocery shopping or to dinner won't even be a challenge! I have to bring me dictionary to the market now. I'll let you know how classes go - the German teachers and the lady who heads the program are great - really funny and nice & austrian. It's such a switch to have small classes, call your teachers (some of them) by their first name and do your homework in a coffee house! Let me know whats up at home & Stanford!

Love,

Chrissie :)
