                                                                                              Otaheiti August  27 (?)

My dear Friend,

The arrival of the Brig Dart. of London from the coast of A? bound for P. Jackson affords me another opportunity of writing to you. You will no doubt be glad to hear from us by every conveyance, as be assured we are & shall be from you. Since my last to you from Java ? ?, which I hope you have long since read we as a family have truly experienced much ? from the Loard. We have been favoured with tolerable health & the addition of a daughter to our number. We have named her Eleanor. She was baptised by Mr Jefferson. Her Mother ? had a better time though ? less medical or rather ? skill & attendance. The Lord can & generally does ? back that is to bear it. ? is at present ill of a fever but it does not appear to be of a bad kind. This is the tenth day of her illness & I think through many she begins to mend. The illness is still on ? but rapidly depopulating through the ravages of disease & the ? practice of killing children & human sacrifices. The district of Mattavy pretty well escapes from the latter by means of our resistance on it. I wish I could give you some favouable account of our labours among these heathens of Otaheti. We have ? arrived to a period of trial & discouragement Satan is evidently ? hard at work here ? ? opposition to us & the gospel. we have experienced but a trifling degree of it yet, but I think we are likely soon to experience much more. The people are very resistent to hear us & often laugh at the most awful & alarming truths they hear.

this last Sabbath in my talks among the people of this district I have found no easy or assembled to address them & more attentive ? usually they have been of late. We have to address them in parties as we can find them & some times these parties are but very small - for they will not go any distance to form a good congregation & therefore the labour of preaching to them is much greater than it would otherwise be, for where once speaking to them would do we have to address them perhaps eight or ten times. The whole of the number I could assemble to address the two last Lords days & that at since times & places were about 150 persons capable of undestanding & traveled almost the whole of that part of the district that is inhabited; partly from their own willingness to hear & partly from the ? of the inhabitants to ? me at present in my hand proffitable companion! Brothers Jefferson & Scott, Nott Bicknell & Youle, Elder & Wilson are companions in this cause. ? only then ? pain address the people. Mr Elder ? this work for several months past, ?thers of the royal admiral ? and I & ? with the language as he who has ? & proffer to begin this exercise. ? you that are now in early expectation ? & we hope reinforced by a the society that we stand much in need of both on account of our still precarious situation & the smallness of our present task of ? apparent Messrs Youl & Nott & myself has prepared two small casks more of pork for you to dispose of as the former & had obtained & promise of a passage for them from Captain Myers. Took the calamitous disaster of shipwreck he doing us that service. I cannot give you an account of that disagreeable catastrophe, you will see him at P. Jackson as he & Mr Turnbull have often agreed for a passage on the Dart. it is uncertain whether we shall get a passsage for that on this vessel as Captain ? has a considerable quantity of pork to take with him. I hope you
