Miles Franklin pocket diary, 1916-1917

TUES. MARCH 7 1916 Snowed a good deal of the day. Only went out to post office. Wrote a little on articles

WED. MARCH 8 1916 Went shopping on Fulham Rd. with Mrs Ussher. Did some writing & had a nap. Streets full of sloppy melting snow like Chicago. Heard of Dr Favill's death.

THUR. MARCH 9 1916 Went to town to bank etc Fooled around & came home feeling most dis-spirited. Bit better later & worked on article about Baby Camp. Fine day

FRI. MARCH 10 1916 Eyes not so good so went & worked with Mrs Ussher at French Chapel. Lunch together & went shopping at Junior Army & Navy stores. Got home exhausted & slept till seven p.m.

SAT. MARCH 11 1916 Shopped & house cleaned in morning & went with Mrs Ussher to hear Mrs Despard in afternoon & brought Phyl Meggitt home to tea & supper with me.

SUN. MARCH 12 1916 Pottered in morning. In afternoon went to Kew Gardens & called on the Walsøe's & returned to met Kath at Queen's Hall & heard the Butt Concert.

MON. MARCH 13 1916 Went down to Deptford to see Miss M & Miss [previous word written over Mrs] R & the babies. Miss M in bed & Miss R. poorly. It rained so I spent the night with the staff at Evelyn home & slept with Phyllis Meggitt.

TUES. MARCH 14 1916 Came home from Deptford. Went to meet Mrs Ussher at Chapel via Selfridges & Miss Champion's. We had dinner together & to Police W. meeting in Mansion Hse. Miss Newcomb took us to tea & then we came home on top of 'bus together. Nell came & we sat up late.

WED. MARCH 15 1916 Stayed in house all day In late afternoon Miss Newcomb came & had tea & we enjoyed her very much Kath & I took her to the 'bus at Battersea bridge & then Kath & I sat up late talking

THUR. MARCH 1916 Shopped in morning. Worked on article & then went walking along embankment such lovely soft greyness. Came on to rain later. Went to bed at 9.45.
