Memphis 26th December 1865

Mrs. P. C. Cameron Care of P. C. Cameron Hillsboro North Carolina

Dear Mother,

Here we are in Memphis at the Gayaso House, we arrived this morning at half past nine o'clock Mr. Collins spent the day here & has just left on the 4 o'clock boat (the first that has left since we came in; Browman's boat I believe it is) for the plantation, taking the children negroes & baggage; he hopes to be back day after tomorrow for we will spend a day or two after he comes & will probably have today week as Tuesdays are the days for Browman's boat to go down the river & he seems to prefer that boat- We were five nights & four days making the trip, fortunately for the children

& myself the trains do not connect either in Lynchburg or Chattanooga we had to remain a night at both places so were on The cars for two night consecutively._ Both of the children are well today. Annie's arm is perfectly well again She was able to put on the dress Xmas morning at Chattanooga which delighted her very much for she thought that would protect her from the doctors & she had thought every gentleman that spoke to her was a doctor up to that time & was frightened accordingly._ As we passed through the limestone region of VA & Tenn Rebecca was made very sick by the water her stomach was completely upset but she was relieved by two doses of Paregoric & not allowing her to drink The water poor little thing She suffered very much from thirst She has not allowed Marie
