January 5, 1916.

Mr. John Graney. Sehenevus National Bank, Schenevus, New York

My dear Sir:— A response to your communication of November 20th, has been delayed because of the great press of work which has occupied my attention. I want you to know, however, that I appreciate very much your cordial expressions of approval of my action in the Hillstrom case. I did what appeared to be my plain and simple duty, holding my mind open at all times for the reception of any facts which were likely to throw additional light on the case of the murderer Hillstrom.

The only thing I received was a mass of about twenty-five thousand letters, a few inspired by maudlin sentiment and the bulk of them of a threatening character and the appeal of the President of the United States which was utterly devoid of reason. It is a source of real pleasure to know that men like yourself throught-out the United States who are law-abiding and believe in upholding our institutions of government, approve of my action in this case.

I have taken the liberty of showing your letter to the State Board of Pardons and the members join with me in this expression of appreciation.

Cordially yours,

Governor.
