2) yelling all the time Free Speech - It is the Foreign Born. They never had no free speech in the country they come, on any thing else. But they came to this country to better their condition. Then what do we get for our pay for letting such Riff Raff in here. They turn around and lick the hand that feeds them. And that try to better their condition. There is not one in fifty of these Riff Raff Reformers so called, that have a vote in this Country. And it is a wonder to me (and million of others) that any city or state in this Country will allow them to talk on the Public Streets - or Squares - Parks - or Commons in this Country. Their inflammatory braggadocio Insolence and overbearing nonsense. In making this statement about Foreign Born, I dont refer to the Irish People for with few exceptions, we have no better class than them in this Country

3) You dont have to have a head like Daniel Webster, or to be a mind reader to know who I mean. I am glad you had the courage of your conviction, and a mind of your own to put Joseph Hillstrom where he will never make any more trouble for your state or any other. There is only one regret that you could not have taken all the I.W.W. - and Etton - and the rest of the trouble Breeders in this country and filled them full of cold lead. There is not one that would miss them. Only the keepers of Prisons and jails where Etton and his coequals have often been guests. I hope and Pray that the day is not far off, when the Governors of all states in this country, will cooperate with you in driving these undesireables out of this country. Give them a Polite invitation to get out. And if they dont get out kick them

4) out. With all due respet for President Wilson, I think he should have attended to his own Business in washington (and the lord knows he has all he can attend to) without trying to hamper justice in your state, By asking for another respite for Hillstrom. You are the Governor of that state, and there is no question but what you know how to run it. And I know you would not see a life taken, or a injustice done, and would be the first to Right a wrong if one was done. The decent People of this country are with you, and against the I.W.W. and Riff Raffs like them. You have showed these I.W.W. that they cant override justice truth liberty and Right. I take off my hat and bow low to you. Make your Record clean. Be true to yourself, to your god, to your state, and your country and all will be well. (over)

January 6, 1916.

Mr. A. H. C. Harvey, Boston, Mass.

My dear Mr. Harvey: -

The press of dates in my office has prevented an earlier acknowledgment of your cordial and interesting letter of November 20th, with relation to my action in the Hillstrom case.

The campaign which was waged on behalf of this criminal has been a revelation to me. While I knew that there were growing up in this country, organizations which were opposed to our system of government, I had no idea that they had such a following. Upwards of thirty thousand letters were received by me, most of which were threatening in character and many of which were vicious. After this bombardment, it is a real pleasure to read your patriotic, American sentiments.

I have taken the liberty of showing your letter to the members of the Board of Pardons who join me in this word of thanks.

Very truly yours,

Governor.
