Philadelphia Pa. Sept. 19. 1915
Hon Governor. Spry
Sir The State of Utah of which you are its chief magistrate has condemed Joseph Hillstrom to suffer the death penalty for the alleged murder on the night of Jan 10 1914 of J.S. Morrison and his son Arling. The singers of this petition do enter protest against this second murder on the 1st day of October 1915 as contemplated by the State. You have of course received the evidence verbatim as contained in the Court Record. We ask you: Can you find one word of direct, convincing, unbiased, conclusive evidence that leaves absolutely no room for "a reasonable doubt" in your mind of the guilt of Joe. Hillstrom if the laws of the State of Utah are laid down upon the same fundamental base as the laws of all other States of the Nation, then the defendent Joseph Hillstrom must be proven guilty beyond "a reasonable doubt." It is the sworn duty of the state officers

acting for the Sate of Utah to render every available assistance to the accused to prove his innocence. According to the testimony of the various witnesses for the State, no direct evidence was introduced to connect the defendent with the crime as alleged, but he was convicted upon the flimsiest circumstancial evidence. The defendant Joe Hillstrom was not given a fair an impartial trial, but convicted of murder on the first degree in a community undul prejudiced, and hostile against the defendant by reason of his connection with an unpopular "Labor organisation." The State did not establish a motive, for motive their must be when one human use the extreme of taking the life of a fellow human, unless there is insanity or from heredity instinct for which the individual cannot be held responsible. Now what were the motive, robbery, jealousy, or Revenge? The State remains silent. The States eyes in essence; you Joseph Hillstrom have taken the lives of two of her citizens: you have not heeded the commandment; "Thou shall not kill!' and because of you have not heeded the commandment

Thou shall not kill. I the State of Utah through its office. "I will kill you!" Now the defendant ceases to be on trial. It is the State of Utah (that proposes to carry out the very thing it denies to an individual member of society) that stands convicted. It is the State of Utah that premeditate murder in a word "Revenge." It is the State of Utah that advocates the law of Moses, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a life for a life. If this method and practice were effective in the elimination of offences against society then crime should have banished from the earth ages ago. We the undersigned citiens all residing in Philadelphia are opposed to capital punishment we advocate that society shall find a better method of restraining those who offend other than the death penalty. You are the Governor of Utah: It is within your power to exectue a stay of proceedings and grant clemency to Joseph Hillstrom. If you as Governor of the State of Utah say to Joseph Hillstrom "Thou shall not kill," then onefully, doubly, trebly, yu have to word
