ReadAboutContentsHelp
This collection documents the experiences of a California family during the early 20th Century, including the First World War. There are 109 letters written by Charles E.H. Bates beginning in his childhood in Alameda, California, and ending in the late 1920s as he begins a career in medicine. Letters sent from California and France while Bates served with the American Expeditionary Forces date from January 1918 through May 1919. There is a larger collection of 784 letters to Bates from his family:  father, mother, and four brothers, as well as friends, including the woman who became his wife. Tuesday Afternoon.

Hello You –

Your blonde friend has moved from her room to her mothers and later will go downstairs – She's feeling fairly spry but still somewhat "pale and interesting looking" as mother just told Aunt Carrie – Roberta, it seems, isn't getting on too well. Her ears bother her a lot – I'm sorry poor kid. No doubt I will be able to call on her before she gets around much.

I had thot [thought] that when I wrote this I could take an hour off and walk to the post box – but now I'm up I don't feel quite so gay.

Your mother phoned this morning, very kindly. Of course whomever was getting news all along from next door. No doubt she was suprised, tho, to find that your hard hearted friend hadn't told you of the coming event, when Sunday she said O & I were better.

Gave Uncle Bob your message and he laughed.

You see your letter arrived to help cheer the passing hours this morning. I wasn't asked to Priscilla's wedding – they neglected the Haslett's, tho at one time LeRoy and I were quite friendly.

I had thot [thought] maybe I would tag along as Roberta's escort as it really doesn't make much difference who goes to the church – but now I guess she won't be going. My afternoon party has just arrived. Eleanor sent me some ice cream.

You didn't get the idea of those pictures – that is the one Tony D Mark. That meant his name was Tony, I was D. and Mark the good-looking one. He was the one that might have caused you worry. The enclosed was taken at Biarritz. Bob thinks it's the best I've ever had taken. Suit yourself as to his judgement!

I haven't had those [illegible] taken yet – anon I hope to. Will look different won't I? Afraid I'll never be quite the same again. Of course I hope to enjoy another trip abroad – but haven't you ever wanted to go to South America!! Dr. Martin's nurse phoned that he's sick in bed so can't see us this week. Just as well for us perhaps as I doubt if we would have felt like going. Aurevoir – Doris –

Friday –

Dear Begoo,

Glad the snap shot passed judgement satisfactorily. Things are going pretty well these days – throat smoother and the amount I eat is terrible. I shall soon lose my slender girlish figure if I continue to be such a gormand [gourmand].

Wednesday I got

around all afternoon in a most fetching new dress and nothing exciting happened, not even a letter. True there were a lot of people downstairs – the Shakespeare Club was having a lecture here.

Yesterday I called on Roberta and we had an ice-cream party served by Leila McCartney. It was the day we were supposed to go see Dr. Martin, but neither of us were equal to a trip to the city and anyway
