ReadAboutContentsHelp
This collection documents the experiences of a California family during the early 20th Century, including the First World War. There are 109 letters written by Charles E.H. Bates beginning in his childhood in Alameda, California, and ending in the late 1920s as he begins a career in medicine. Letters sent from California and France while Bates served with the American Expeditionary Forces date from January 1918 through May 1919. There is a larger collection of 784 letters to Bates from his family:  father, mother, and four brothers, as well as friends, including the woman who became his wife. Please note that historical materials in the Bates Collection may include viewpoints and values that are not consistent with the values of the California State Library or the State of California and may be considered offensive. Materials must be viewed in the context of the relevant time period but views are in no way endorsed by the State Library. now of course he can't see us. He incidentally, continues about the same, but a little better than one day when he was very near death's door. So mother had Dr. Reynolds come in and look us over and he thot [thought] my throat was getting on very well, but discouraged my going calling and said things about going easy and staying in – so what with that and similar admonitions received by letter today, I suppose I must abide by them. Oh I had Montie buy a "Sunset" and read that article. I hope you'll let me see your answer.

Now look here C. Edward H. – I dislike thinking of you losing sleep on my account – of course I know it was the coffee – but your thots [thoughts] wandered. She's not worth it, you know, really (and that's not for you to dispute) and how can you get your work done when you get tres fatigué. Someone will have to be telling you to take naps.

"It," as you kept calling my niece yesterday, has been paying us another visit today. The maid didn't show up so

Roberta brought her and "parked" her with us while she went to a party. The child hasn't been very happy in spite of all my fascinating ways. Once I just swore at her and went down and played the piano which appeased her.

You must have been well on your way last night before I went to sleep – and I hadn't been drinking coffee or tea, either.

You'll be in town before long perhaps, but just the same I thot [thought] I'd fool you and right [write] to greet you when you get back some time tomorrow.

I'm sure "It" send her love to Uncle Dudley –

Tuesday

Hello again,

I don't know just why this letter is following so soon upon the skies except that I just got in from the city a little while ago and all is well. Mother took me over to see Dr Frederick Leevitt whom Dr. Martin rec-
