ReadAboutContentsHelp
This collection documents the experiences of a California family during the early 20th Century, including the First World War. There are 109 letters written by Charles E.H. Bates beginning in his childhood in Alameda, California, and ending in the late 1920s as he begins a career in medicine. Letters sent from California and France while Bates served with the American Expeditionary Forces date from January 1918 through May 1919. There is a larger collection of 784 letters to Bates from his family:  father, mother, and four brothers, as well as friends, including the woman who became his wife. Please note that historical materials in the Bates Collection may include viewpoints and values that are not consistent with the values of the California State Library or the State of California and may be considered offensive. ommended. All seems to be satisfactory and I'm dismissed. White spots were mentioned – still a few which ought soon to disappear.

Wes drove us out and back to the Ferry in a machine. Visited Roberta L. for a few minutes. She's feeling much better but hasn't been out yet and didn't feel strong enough to go over with us.

It's beautiful and warm here today. Can't be much better down there. Wonder what time of the night or morning you departed after a wonderful time at the wedding. Your machine is outside your house. Suppose Tiny is still around. Not being able to get central last night I was afraid you weren't going to be able to get us perhaps. I'm glad you did a. Be good! I lost heavily the last hand last night.

As ever D.

Dear Charley –

I happened to see a letter today which Aub. Rawlins, a 1st yr. man in the Med. School there wrote to Vic Randolph here who is an Alpha Kappa Delta brother of mine but who is also a Nu Sigma. still on the fence. I am writing Aub. tonight & hope will decide for him in favor of Phi Chi. And you go after him also – & if you birds don't get hold of him, you ought to be kicked in your pants! Pardon the indelicate expression! But Aub. is an A1 man & will mean much to Phi Chi there if you get him. So "go to" [underlined] Charley & here's luck.

How's the old med. work coming? Hope as fine as silk and nothing to worry about. We're head over heels in it and like it better than ever. You

surely will enjoy the clinical & ward work when you come up to S.F. San Francisco

We're getting along O.K. in the house here. Have had some interesting clinics, talks and smokers already, and really everything is humming. Wish you could be here to be in with the bunch.

The Fed. Board Vocational Office is fixing things up O.K. so no need to bother any more about that.

So long, old man, & let us know if you get Aub. Fraternally,

Ted Lawson (over) [underlined]
