ReadAboutContentsHelp
This collection documents the experiences of a California family during the early 20th Century, including the First World War. There are 109 letters written by Charles E.H. Bates beginning in his childhood in Alameda, California, and ending in the late 1920s as he begins a career in medicine. Letters sent from California and France while Bates served with the American Expeditionary Forces date from January 1918 through May 1919. There is a larger collection of 784 letters to Bates from his family:  father, mother, and four brothers, as well as friends, including the woman who became his wife. Please note that historical materials in the Bates Collection may include viewpoints and values that are not consistent with the values of the California State Library or the State of California and may be considered offensive. Thursday

The reason why – I don't know! Perhaps I wanted to wait and see what you had to say. Anyway today you will get a letter. Would you have gone to Yosemite?

I wish the trip could have come off but perhaps it's just as well – what with this concert being announced for Sunday, I would have been torn between the two. There's some talk in the family of going to Mt. Diablo Club

for the holiday – even to going out late Sunday and staying over. Father wanted to go Saturday – I wouldn't give up Sunday. As yet it's not decided.

Shortly we lunch and then I drive Mother & R.L. to the City. Roberta doesn't seem to desire to go to the doctors, tho I should think it was wise.

However her throats her own, and mines all right so I should worry. But she has errands and will call at the Howells.

This is quite scrawly and in haste but quite in accord to answer one received this A.M. Percy Fox must be interested.

Thursday Eve.

Mon Cher Edouard –

Well the party is over and was a great success – even if I do say it as shouldn't. Mickie is a peach and I like her even if her brother was a slacker.

Sorry she isn't staying longer. I really have hardly seen her at all yet she's been down two weeks. They leave Sunday. I seemed to spend most of the morning

fixing flowers – but they do make such a difference around everywhere and they are so lovely this time of year.

Your letter came in the midst of it and I could only steal time to glance thru it till after lunch.

Why it didn't come yesterday afternoon, I don't know as it left July at the same time as Steves have.

spending the week in the City and came over – none of my other city friends seem able to make it tho all the East Bay cities were well represented; also Stockton and Portland.

Torid Coillingsley was certainly fine the other night. Gave a splendid talk on "Runarbing the World" tho he really only told us about the world that has been destroyed; and then the need for runarbing – but he didn't give us any of his ideas as to how it is to be done. The war has certainly improved him as a man and in his writings. Some of his letters written during the war and published, and a book [illegible] are really beautiful. It was so lovely yesterday that Roberta drove to Oakland with me in the afternoon and we also called on the ducks tho had nothing with which to feed them. It was just one of those days when you feel like starting off and don't care if you ever come back. But R. seemed to want to.
