Ramon Sweeney Letters

ReadAboutContentsHelp
Ramon “Ray” Sweeney (1896-1986), was born and raised in San Francisco. Due to his father’s untimely death just before the 1906 earthquake, Sweeney dropped out of school at the age of ten in order to work and help support his family. He enlisted in the Navy in 1917 and was initially stationed at Mare Island, California. He sailed for the Far East in 1918, and spent time in Honolulu, Shanghai, and the Philippines. He was discharged in 1919, and returned to San Francisco where he worked in the wholesale fruit and produce business.

to her the same day. That day we were in a parade and it was some hot day the prespiration was running off of me like water. Got paid the other day, see after the first month they pay you every two weeks. I got 17.00 dollars. The pay for one month would be 35.90 I guess they will take the money out for the allotment next time as they could not off this time. I guess as that card reads you won't get many allotments for about a month. I'm sending $16.00 dollars in this letter now. Hoping it will get there all right as I don't want to get a money order or registry letter as they pays us in currency

There is not much to tell you about this place as it is the same thing every day. When we get back I don't know what they will do with us. Hope Elmo is doing better. I don't suppose he had time to read that part pretaining to himself. Is Vera going to school every day or does she get them home yet. Hoping every one is in good health. With love Ray.

P.S When I counted the currency I only had 15.00 so am sending it.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS WAR ACTIVITIES CAMP Aug 19th 1918 Dear Mama

Got your letter at 5.30 pm and am answering it right away because I have nothing to do for a few minutes. You say Uncle Joe wrote me but I have not recieved any letter from him yet. If it does not show up in a few days I will write him so. I got the tobacco all right in the last package. I guess I forgot to mention it. There is not much doing here at present. And they have got me guessing whether I am going to get away on the first or not. We get paid to morrow but I don't expected much as that last $15.00 was out of $17.00 I got for the first two week of the second month, that means on this two week pay they will take out the allotment money. I don't suppose you have recieved any of the allotments or you would have written so.

Don't send any money to me as you need it more than I do. Saturday I went to town with about two dollars, when I bumped into a tailor shop and he releaved me of 1.25 to fix the blouse of my suit. Then I knew I could not stay in town that night so I got something to eat and went to a free show and started home. Sunday morning I started out with the remaining 75. Got a free ride from San Pedro to Los which is about 30 miles I saved out 35¢for the fare back but got a free ride back to Pedro. When I got there I spent my last 25¢ for tooth paste and was going to try and get used to go around busted for a while but you spoiled it.

If you happen to see Uncle Joe tell him I did not get his letter. Hoping to hear from home soon. With love to all Ray

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS WAR ACTIVITIES CAMP

Sept 5th 1918

Dear Ma.

Just dropping you a line to tell you I won't be home as I expected. They changed the orders the last minute and say we are going on the 15th of this month. Maybe we won't go to Frisco at all now, because all the shipments on the 15th go to New York. After this I am going to wait till I am on the boat or train before I write I am leaving here. I wrote to Uncle Joe and he answered my letter and told me to answer his soon as I got it, which I did the same day I wrote to you last.

There is not much to write about down here it is the same old thing every day. The other day I met H. Lewicki he is stationed on a small boat in the bay and was
