Ramon Sweeney Letters

ReadAboutContentsHelp
Ramon “Ray” Sweeney (1896-1986), was born and raised in San Francisco. Due to his father’s untimely death just before the 1906 earthquake, Sweeney dropped out of school at the age of ten in order to work and help support his family. He enlisted in the Navy in 1917 and was initially stationed at Mare Island, California. He sailed for the Far East in 1918, and spent time in Honolulu, Shanghai, and the Philippines. He was discharged in 1919, and returned to San Francisco where he worked in the wholesale fruit and produce business.

going to Mexico. He was at the station seeing if he could not transfer here as he did not want to go. Hoping every thing is getting along all right since you wrote last and you are all in good health. I will close now as there is nothing for me to write about.

Dear Ma.

I suppose you received my postal from Honolulu by this time. We only stayed there overnight but it is some town. It is nothing like you would imagine it was. Every thing is as clean as a whistle and the homes are beautiful. That night I did not go to bed but layed on the grass in the front of the Y.M.C.A for about an hour. At five I got up and had a good shower in the Y.M.C.A. and was ready to see some more of the town.

We had to be back to the ship at eight oclock and you should have seen the boys every one was loaded down with pineapples and bananas, as much as a whole

bunch in each hand.

This is our tenth day out of Honolulu and expect to land at Yokahoma to morrow evening or early the next morning.

I don't think we will stay there more than a half of day. But another sailor and my self are going to Tokio when we land it is about an hours ride from Yokahoma.

We make two stops in China and won't get to the Philippines till about the tenth of the month

When we were two days out of Honolulu we had a storm and nearly every one was sea sick It hit me early in the morning so I did not eat that day and after I vomited a few times I felt fine again.

I don't know if you could make out that last letter as I had to turn it over before I had it half written. This letter I will mail in Japan and try and tell you all a little about what I will see there.

Will send two small photos of Honolulu one is the Y.M.C.A the other is at the beach of Waikiki. If I get any pictures of place we stop a in Japan I will send them along.

Will be glad when we hit the Philippines because this been a Chinese ship every thing else is Chinese about it. We can not hardly eat the meals. They cook. You can't imagine how a mothers home cooked meal would be to us now. Say for instance

with some hot biscuits like you make. Besides we are traveling steerage down in the hole of the ship. We sleep in the same bunks that about 400 coolie Chinemen slept in last trip. It is a great life is you dont weaken.

Well we arrived in Yokahoma all right and surly did see some sites we got in about eight oclock and it rained all night but that did not bother us much. We tramped in it all night. If I was to get in and write all I had seen I would not have enough paper and it is 8.30 now. The boat leaves at 9 oclock. Hoping you will get this letter alright as it is the last minute and I will
