Ramon Sweeney Letters

ReadAboutContentsHelp
Ramon “Ray” Sweeney (1896-1986), was born and raised in San Francisco. Due to his father’s untimely death just before the 1906 earthquake, Sweeney dropped out of school at the age of ten in order to work and help support his family. He enlisted in the Navy in 1917 and was initially stationed at Mare Island, California. He sailed for the Far East in 1918, and spent time in Honolulu, Shanghai, and the Philippines. He was discharged in 1919, and returned to San Francisco where he worked in the wholesale fruit and produce business.

Los Angeles July 7th

Dear Ma,

This is the nearest thing like home I have seen yet. Yesterday we got liberty from 11.30 am till to night at 7.30 pm. This club is something like the ones for the sailors and soldiers in the city. Women run it and every amusement is free, they have reading matter, pool tables, pianoes and victrolas. The main thing is the eats which you pay two bits a meal. For lunch they gave us a nice cucumber and tomatoe salad, roast pork, mashed potatoes, green peas, hot buns with lots of butter, ice cream and milk. The reason every thing taste so good these women cook it right here and it is just like home. I had supper here and it was great. Some of the men are just finishing there ham and eggs now at break fast. I have just eaten mine they even had

cigarettes and matches free with your breakfast this morning. Your room cost you 1.50 for the night which includes a shower of warm and hot water in each room. I had a partner so I only paid 75 cents. Yesterday we took in a show and they only charged us the war tax of two cents for all enlisted men. Last night I when to the Orpheum which was a good show. I forgot to say that yesterday I had my picture taken. I don't know how it will turn out as my face is a handsome brown nearly black from the heat. I will get the pictures to night when I get the train for San Pedro. and I will mail this letter with them. It is eleven oclock now so I think I will walk around the town for a couple of hours yet and then see is I can find a free show like yesterday. They certainly treah the men fine in Los Angles.

Dear Ma.

Did not write sooner as I was waiting for that treat Del wrote about it was certainley swell. So you thought the picture looked funny, well it does some what as I told you I was nicely colored and the sun bleaches your eye brows till they nearly get white. Some day I will get a good picture then you can discard that one.

The soap and tobacco just got here in time as I was low on both.

Del asked about my shield on my blouse maybe in a few month I will have one as a second shell man in a gun crew. I had some funny luck. I met a fellow here who is in charge of the sail loft. And asked what were the chance of getting in. He said I would have to get a recomendation.

so I wrote to Henery Maas my old foreman at Henrix's place. He sent back a good recomendation in a few day from Capt. Henrix himself. The day before I got it they changed me into the gun crew so now I can't use it.

Glad to hear you took in the Orpheum which I suppose you enjoyed very much and going auto riding, getting kind of sporty in your old age huh.

What is a matter with Elmo telling you he is going to turn over a new leaf? He better hurry up and get started.

It is the same old thing down here only since I got changed the drilling is somewhat different. We have some row boat drilling and work on the big guns most of the time. But since my twenty one days are up at the detention camp we have some privledges and can use the Y.M.C.A. hall
