Ramon Sweeney Letters

ReadAboutContentsHelp
Ramon “Ray” Sweeney (1896-1986), was born and raised in San Francisco. Due to his father’s untimely death just before the 1906 earthquake, Sweeney dropped out of school at the age of ten in order to work and help support his family. He enlisted in the Navy in 1917 and was initially stationed at Mare Island, California. He sailed for the Far East in 1918, and spent time in Honolulu, Shanghai, and the Philippines. He was discharged in 1919, and returned to San Francisco where he worked in the wholesale fruit and produce business.

Dear Ma

We are having a little vacation in a deserted part of the Philippines. When we landed at Cavite they thought we needed a rest I guess. So they send all the sailors and marines here. It is like a millionaires home in the States all beautiful gardens and building but that has nothing to do with our stomachs. We don't get half enough to eat mor go around all day talking about things we used to get. Yesterday we all got vaccinated. I don't think we will stay here more than ten days. This is the fourth day all ready.

We had a great time at Shanghai. It is a larger city than Yokahoma and we saw more. From were the boat lands is a raod along side of the Yangtse River call the Bund. There is all monuments and parks and on the other side of this street is all large buildings French English and American banking houses and different concerns. The American people gave use a dinner that night we landed at the Oriental Hotel. Every thing was run by the VChinses but you would have thought you were in a large American hotel, it is a bout nine storys high.

The next day we wento to what they call the old city of Shanghai. There were some old temples and park we went through they say were four hundred years old. The streets are only about six feet wide. There are so many people that it looks like they live and die in the vacinity of there houses. Every thing is pulled around by man power, even when they have a funeral two men carry the coffin. Every body has to ride around in a rick asha it is the same way in Japan and even more so than in China. It dont matter how big the load is they pull it through the streets on two wheel carts them selves.

After we leave here they say we will go on a training ship which has the Admiral of the Asatic Fleet on it.

There is a gold braid come in from a ship in about 30 minutes and they are making us all pick up a shovels and rake to make believe we are busy.

A gold braid is a comissioned officer maybe this one will be a high muck-a-muck for all we know. Yesterday I was in a gang that had to shellac the floor in a ward of one of the hospitals. There is not much more to tell and hoping evey one is well since I was home. Write as soon as you can address it to the station and if I am on a ship they will send it from there.

With love to all Ramon
