Dr. Sir

I am extremely sorry that I had it not in my power to continue your Guard longer as I much wished so to do. I expect that there will be a guard of regulars shortly placed at Fort Blount

Your Conduct at that place so far as has come to my knowledge has been satisfactory and well conducted, and for which I beg you to accept my thanks

laws will not punish the innocent, and that no other satisf action can be given, but by the punishment of the real ^individual ^actual & real offenders - I don't wish to recapitulate, nor bring forward any former transgressions committed by the Indians, other ways, I could easily recite a great fifty murders that have been committed of a very recent date in the time of profound peace, and some of them murder by their principal leaders - I am sincerely disposed to obliviate ^on my part all enormities that have taken place between the Citizens of tennessee, & the Cherokees been committed by the Cherokees before the last f hoping it is the wish of that nation to be ^become entirely ^friendly and pacific; but on the other hand, should the nation authorize any murders to be committed upon any of our ^good & innocent Citizens; that I Shall ^then take the most ready & early method, to of bringing them to a sense of their duty - I am ^much pleased to hear that Mrs Williams's child, is to be restored to the mother, it has been a long time detained contrary to their the engagments & promisses in their treaty with the United States - say nothing about the baseness & inhumanity of so cruel and act -I request you will also be [pleased?] to let them know that I shall ^also expect, that they will ^in a short time return Miss Johnson, ^taken from this County that have been so long in captivity, and within so small a distance of her friends & own fathers house, and likewise a number of horses that they have ^lately stolen Accept the respects of sir

Knoxville August the 13th 1818

Dr Sir

I inclose you a coppy [sic] of a Bill of indictment against De Townes Madon prefered in the County of Knox at the Circuit Court of February 1815 Madon was out on Bail, failed to appear, his Securities forfieted their recogni =zence &c The freinds of Marris and Prouentor are very anxious that Madon should be apprehend =ed and desire that you would by proclamation as authorised by Law offer a reward to be given for his apprehention- For my own part I am not able to give you a full Discription [sic] of the person I recollect that he is a Low man perhaps about five feet Eight or nine inches dark complection [sic] has somewhat a French appearence he had inlisted [sic] in the 39th Ret Commanded by Col Williams shortly before this murder was

Commited [sic] I suppose he is about 30 years of age- says he has read Law and if I am not mistaken think he had License to practice In his manner somewhat intrusive and medling and very laquacious [sic] I saw him once or twice in the year Eighteen hundred and fifteen this is his discription [sic] as well as I can recollect it

Col Williams sugested the propriety of Advertising in the Lixington Reporter and some Ohio Posser
