(35) ye pappus, which is hairy, is white, when ye flower is opened. It depends than upon what part of ye flower ye word coma is to be applied, whether ye general appearance of ye blossom or or only ye pappus — or whether ye pappus most ye whole of it be yellow in order to be arranged under ye Chorysocoma [Chrysocoma], about wh I am uncertain.

The leaves are broad at ye base, being considerably widened a little way from ye stem, & an decurrent, but run down only a very little way & break off very abrupt — but they run down nearly to ye next leaf — ye leaves being very thick. — The point is sharp & appears to me ye leaf is very properly dagger shaped. ye mergin is very slightly waved. — there are on each side ye large vein a very transparent longi= tudinal vein — ye upper side is very some what — & ye under very downy. ye leaf is flat & partly except yt ye middle vein projects considerably. — it is prety large The

(36) The stem is very little branched & ye head in ye form of ye common Life-everlasting. It has is very little odoriferous — but ye smell is some what like ye Common — — It grows among ye common in old fields — is larger & of a yellowish colour wh distinguishes it at first light. It has no female flowers.

The common is intinded in my paper for odoratissimus but is not — The strong smell led to think it must be yt spec. ____________________

Gnaphalium indicum? Common Life-everlasting

It seems to be between ye Stellatum spec. w. margaritaceum & ye (It has no female flowers) The leaves are sessile, lanco= =late, that is, narrow, (not linear) sharp pointed — broadest toward their ends apices — margin a surface deep green & a very little downy — ye under surface covered with a very fine short

(37) short down — The stem is errect — covered with a fine white down — very much branched low> along ye upper part & some times ye lower. They ter= =minate in 3, 4, or 5 blossoms, which have very short or no pedicles. they point different ways. — & ye general surface of ye whole of ye flowers on one stalk are very uneven or approaching to roundish The lower part of ye scales is fleshy — but ye outer ones less so yn ye inner — leaves are not villous but downy — ye Corymbes are not level — & ye branches ae most nearest ye top — The pappus is hary & white, It seems therefor to come nearest to ye indcium, perhaps it is a new Species. ___________

(38) I think comes nearest to it —

Stems erect, very downy — branched toward ye top, & divided in to many more, terminating in single flowers, each supported on a leafless pedicle. no leaves on ye branches.

The leaves are sessile, or nearly imbracing ye stem — long, narrow, sharp pointed, widest towards ye apices — & are lanceolate — both sides downy — ye down very thick & some wt long. but ye upper side less downy ny ye under.

The disk of ye flower is yellowish — ye calixes, white upper part white, towards ye base thick & green — The white part is plaited — & ye leaves acute — The outer scales short — their claws thick & covered with thick down. The scales open & spread when & after ye flowers are in full bloom. The flowers on ye stalk are erect & make nearly an even surface

(39) surface — The flowers are prety large — appear snow white except ye yellow of ye florets in ye center. pappus hairy, white — They remain unhanged for a long time. Grow in high rich ground in pastures.

This species is whitter yn ye former — ye former wh is of being a whitish yellowish white thro^ all its stages. may possibly be of ye Chrysocoma.

Sept. 10th Head Betona. (Purple)

The upper segt of ye Corol. is emergenated — ye apex of ye fila= =ments are is divided & s as if there should be 2. anthera on each — but ye is but one — ye other part terminates in a long point — like a horn — The lower segt of ye Corol is emerga & ciliated —
