106 — 1885 — — Cambridge, Mass. July 2 — I took the noon train in the Boston, Revere Beach & Lynn R.R. for Oak Island and spent 2 hrs botanizing on Revere Beach & Oak Island. I got back to Boston by 3 P.M. Triticum repens, L. } Silene antirrhina, L. } Back of Revere Beach, Revere — Plantago decipiens, Barnéoud. Salt marsh round Oak Isl. Revere Juncus bufonius, L. Border of Oak Isl., Revere Festuca nutans, Willd. Very abundant. Oak Isl. Revere. Lolium perenne, L. (Fide L.H. Bailey jr from specimens sent him similiar to & growing with this. Oak Isl. Revere. Botrychium virginicum, Swartz. Middle of the western part of Oak Isl. Revere.

107 — Cambridge, Mass. July 3 — I took the 10 A.M. boat from Boston for Nahant reaching there at 11.20. Willie Beal met me and I wetn to the house and lunched. Then we walked over to Little Nahant on the Sand just before reaching there, I found the Carex straminea var. moniliformis in abundance. I filled my box with rooting specimens to send to Mr. Bailey, Mich. for his Caricetum. We returned to the house and dined at 3.30. At 5 P.M. I returned by rail to Boston. The day has been very pleasant and cool. A slight thunder shower in the P.M. Artemisia stelleriana Bess. A fine tuft, some 3 ft. in diameter, in sand between Nahant & Little Nahant. Ranunculus sceleratus, L. Marshy land, Nahant. Juncus gerardi, Loisel. Salt marsh, Nahant, very abundant.

108 — 1885 — — Cambridge, Mass. July 16 — During the past two weeks I have been busy drying, poisoning labelling, mounting and putting into my Herbarium all the plants I have collected so far this Spring & Summer besides putting in the Herb. also a package of plants from L.H. Bailey jr. I have also verified and put into the Herb Horace Mann's Cyperaceae outside of Carex. After carefully analyzing them at home (some 30 specimens) I verified them all by comparison at the Gray Herbarium.

Rev. Thos. Morong came down to the Garden to-day and lunched with us. He brought be some Rhododendron maximum, fresh from Medfield. I went to the Gardens this P.M. and found some plants on the way — Centaurea benedicta, L. Arctium lappa L. var. tomentosum, Gray. Dirt-heap between Buckingham St. & Concord Ave. Vincetoxicum nigrum, Moench. Garden St. Growing by the fence of the Observatory Grounds.

109 — 1885 — — Cambridge, Mass. July 17 — This P.M. I went up to my Father's and found Vicia sativa, L. Cultivated ground. ————— — Westmore Vermont — — July 18 — J.R. Churchill, Mrs. Deane and myself arrived here after a hot day's ride in the cars, at 5.30 P.M. It is a grand spot. In front of the Hotel lies Willoughby Lake flanked on one side by Willoughby Mt. with its precipitous ledges and on the other Ananance or Hor Mt. Arthur Chadbourne & his mother are here. After supper we strolled into the woods for a short time and saw magnificent ferns in abundance. Rubus odoratus, L. Deep woods Geum strictum, Ait. Open grounds. —————

110 — 1885 — Westmore Vermont — July 19 — This A.M. Mr. Churchill Mr. Jackson & I went up to the ledges on Willoughby Mt. and botanized. It was a very steep climb, through some fine woods. We mad some glorious finds and saw some grand sights. The ledges are almost perpendicular and bare. We lunched at their foot and returned in the P.M. I washed all my plants in the lake. Arabis petraea, Lam. } Astragalus alpinus, L. } Hedysarum boreale, L. } Potentilla fruticosa, L. } Saxifraga oppositifolia, L. } {Saxifraga} aizoides } Primula mistassinica, Mx. } 1.
