126 — 1885 — — Westmore, Vt. — — Willoughby Lake — — Aug. 4 — A very rainy A.M. We spent most of the time in packing for our departure for Shelburne. The P.M. Mr. Chadbourne & I went up Willoughby Mt. We rambled up slowly to the summit stopping to enjoy the view from Pulpit Rock and descended in time for supper. This evening I packed my botanical chest. Prof Henry G. Jesup left this A.M. for Newport, Vt. 40 Aspidium spinulosum Swz. var. dilitatum {dilatatum} (Fide L.H. Bailey jr from similar specs sent him growing with this.) } Dicksonia punctilobula, Kunze. } Monotropa hypopitys, L. } Tiarella cordifolia, L. } Woods, Willoughby Mt. Solidago bicolor, L. var. concolor, Torr. & Gr. Open ground by Pulpit Rock. 37 Poa serotina, Ehrhart. (Fide L.H. Bailey jr. from similar } spec.s sent him growing with these). Muhlenbergia glomerata, Trin. } Calamagrostis stricta, Trin. } Summit of Willoughby Mt. Rocky ground.

127 — 1885 — — Shelburne, N.H. — — Aug. 5 — We left the Willoughby Lake House this A.M. at 8.30 o'clock, and drove to Island Pond over a road, 20 miles long, in a buckboard with Mr. Richardson, our landlord driving. A large party went in a coach and 4 horses with us. They are to spend the night at the Stewart House at Isl. Pond and return to-morrow. We dined at the Stewart Ho. and took the 1.30 P.M. train for Gorham, reaching there at 3 P.M. There we met a team and drove to Shelburne, where we are established in our old quarters at A.E. Philbrook's. My plants arrived all right. ————— — Shelburne, N.H. — — Aug. 6 — This A.M. I strolled over to the Knubble for a little while with Miss Farley and Christine Farley who are staying here. Everything looks as usual. I found a magnificent Corallorhiza multiflora. I changed the blotters to my plants before dinner. In the P.M. and part of the evening. I labelled my Willoughby Collection. We took a short stroll in the evening. Fred & Stephen Cabot form our school are here, also Prof. J.B. Greenough and family, Jack Vaughan and Mrs. & Loring Briggs & Mr. C.J. White. 128 — 1885 — — Shelburne, N.H. — — Aug. 7 — A clear, cool day. Everything scattered this A.M. fishing & I stayed at home labelling plants. This P.M. I labelled & finished my Willoughby Collection. ————— — Shelburne, N.H. — — Aug. 8 — A clear day, cool in the A.M. and latter part of the P.M. and evening, warm at noon and in the early P.M. I spent most of the day arranging L.H. Bailey jr's plants to send. I shall send him some 90 specimens ————— — Shelburne, N.H. — — Aug. 9 — A clear, comfortable day. This A.M. I finished Mr. Bailey's bundle of some 80 species of plants and shall express them to-morrow A.M. This P.M. we went to Bowls & Pitchers. Aspidium thelypteris, Swz. 44 Carex tentaculata, Muhl. Fide L.H. Bailey jr. from similar specs sent him growing with & like these (but "a short spiked common form") Wet ground ————— —————

129 — 1885 — — Shelburne, N.H. — — Aug. 10 — A rainy day. Worked over my plants this A.M. sorting them &c. Fred Cabot analyzed a number of Ferns in my room. This P.M. I poisoned a number of my plants in the workshop in the barn. I have resolved to poison all my Willoughby Collection here instead of collecting more plants. Read a novel "Leavenworth Case" this evening! I got my poison, dish, brush &c at Gorham. ————— — Shelburne, N.H. — — Aug. 11 — A rather warm day. This A.M. I poisoned plants and played tennis. In the P.M. we made arrangements for a tennis tournament. I also worked on some Florida plants sent me by L.H. Bailey, jr. ————— — Shelburne, N.H. — — Aug. 12 — A warm day. Poisoned my Carices this AM. Verified Florida plants this P.M. Played tow sets of the Tournament before supper.

130 — 1885 — — Shelburne, N.H. — — Aug. 13 — A very rainy day. I poisoned plants this A.M. I the P.M. we went over to the Winthrop House to a fair gotten up for the new church that is building. ————— — Aug. 14 — — Shelburne, N.H. — A beautiful, rather warm A.M. rainy P.M. I poisoned plants for a short time this A.M. and then went up Cabot. After dinner I finished positioning my Willoughby Plants with the exception of a very few which are still in press. I have been from 7 to 8 hours poisoning the collection. ————— — Shelburne, N.H. — — Aug. 15 — A clear day. This A.M. Margie & I took a short walk down the road. Then I took my poisoned plants out of press and put them all in my chest. This P.M. I read a little under the pines and then verified some of Mrs. M.L. Owens New Jersey plants. —— Setaria glauca, Beauv. } cult-grown {Setaria} viridis Beauv. } {cult-grown}
