Hi Grandma! I'm sitting here watching the all-star game and catching up on my correspondence so... you get a letter! It's so strange to watch Dodger stadium on television and know mom and dad are there -- really old home week time because I know all the stories about why Dodger fans boo particular players (Rose, Tammy John, Reggie Jackson) or cheer certain ones or knowing what John Ramsey looks like announcing players and such. It's good because it makes me feel like a real fan and like the Dodgers are really my team. Besides which, one of the clerks in the office is a diehard Yankees fan so I know tomorrow I'll go into the office and hear all kinds of things about the Dodgers and Yankees from this game. Oh well -- competitions and rivalries make it more fun! On other scenes, I've been kind of busy the last few days especially the 4th of July. It's really something to be in this city on the 4th -- so many people and so much enthusiasm and so much to do! I went to a free Beach Boys concert by the Washington Monument where there were 300,000 people or so they tell me. The hillsides and grassy areas surrounding the monument were covered with people and blankets as far as the eye could see -- some people were on the other side of the monument so they couldn't even see the stage, but hear the music! However, everyone seemed to have a great time singing along with all the Beach Boys' old songs, dancing everything from the twist to the swim to the Monkee to all kinds of more modern one too. It was a very mellow relaxed crowd, to put it in California terms, even though we were jumping up and down and dancing. It was so different than a lot of concerts I've been to. I talked to the people on either side of me, made friends, danced with them, and really enjoyed myself. Then, a little later on the same day, I went to the National Symphony concert on the lawn of the Capital with Sarah Caldwell conducting (she's one of the only women conductors with her own orchestra in the United States -- maybe in

the world) That was totally different than the Beach Boys, but equally enjoyable. Most people just relaxed on the lawn and listened to Beethovan, John Philip Sousa (actually we clapped along with sousa), "The Stars and Stripes Forever" and other such patriotic songs. It was really quite a stirring experience especially when the fireworks started immediately after that with the Capital behind us, the Washington Monument in front of us, and the Jefferson Memorial off to one side all lit up (except the Washington because the fireworks were over it). I never fail to marvel at the reactions of kids to fireworks. (Basically I played people-watcher on the 4th most of the day) Everything from absolute fascination and one little (really little -- like a year) kid absolutely mesmorized (or is that mezmorized?) by the lights and not knowing what to do or where to look next -- to on the other end one poor little kid just scared to death of the noise and the bright lights. I loved watching them as much as the fireworks!

That's really all my "news" per se. I also went to a concert at Wolf Trap which is an outdoor ampitheatre in Virginia with buildin seats in the lower area and a big grassy slope for picnics for only $5 a person. Anyway we saw (or heard from where we were sitting would be more appropriate.) Chick Corea who is a jazz pianist with a jazz band too and he was great too!

Other than that, work is going well and I'm enjoying it and my spare time at night to read and sleep and get some sun on weekends (not much though -- it's been too hot to just bake in the sun, and that's not good for me anyway...) I can't wait to go to New York the first of August with Vickie and it looks like a couple of my friends may be visiting in August so that should be fun too---Give my love to all Take care and I'll see ya soon-God bless! Denise
