Dear Sir,

I forwarded my resignation to His Excellency some time in the last month to take effect the first day of this, but am apprehensive it has miscarried, consequently have herewith enclosed ^it to you to deliver to him. The act of 1817. authorises the Courts to make Temporary appointments until the Governor shall nominate a successor; which has been done by the Court of this County.

We have nothing new in the Eastern Empire save what you hear through the medium of the public prints. I doubt not but that you are a candidate for Secretary of State. Having divested myself of official Badge I shall be a candidate at the next Session for Clerk to the H. Repts.

Accept assurances of my sincere friendship

Tho. J. Campbell

Your Excellency will soon be in formed, if not already that Thomas J. Campbell Solicitor General for the fifth solicitorial Circurt has resigned his office. A protempore appointment of a successor will devolve on your Excellency. We have laboured under much disadvantage by having one appointed out of the Circuit I would therefore recommend Nathan Haggard Esq to fill the place of Mr Campbell he lives in about the centre of the circuit He has been frequently appointed by the Courts pro tem in the absence of Mr. Campbell and has given General satisfaction in the performance of the duties of his office

I am with respect your most obedient and humble servant

William Henry Campbell

McMinnville July 8th 1819-

Dear Govrnor [sic], The duty of Confering [sic] a temporary appointment on some Lawyer in this District to fill the vacancy occasioned by Mr Campbell's resignation, Devolves on you, Permit me to inform you that, if appointed to that office, My utmost exertions shall be used to Honor your appointment-

I flatter myself that if you knew how often in Mr Campbell's absence, I have accepted appointments to prevent the state from being unrepresented, & as to general satisfaction &c I should meet with that honor

I am Yours Sincerely

Nathan Haggard

McMinnville 8th July. 1819.

My dear Sir,

Thomas J. Campbell Esquire has resigned as Solicitor for the Government of the fifth solicitorial district or Circuit. Mesrs Saml B Moore & Nathan Haggard have said to me they would be applicants for the pro tem appointment. It affords me pleasure to say to you that say to you that, I am acquaint= ed with them both; both in the social circles or relations of life & as lawyers, that either would discharge the functions of the office (in my opinion) well & that the appointment of either would be pleasing to the Courts, & people of the Circuit.

Accept Sir the assurance of my respect & esteem
