To make the Comon Oyle of Stt. John's
Take of new & levees sallit oyle one quart & put
theirto into afair glass as many of [th]e yellow
flowers of St Johns worte (all [th]e [green] taken
away) as will fill up olwine pint measure then
stir [the]m together w[i]th [th]e knife & set [th]e glass w[i]th [th]e
oyle & flowers in [th]e sun in [th]e hottest place you
find for [th]e space of 15 days & once they set [one]
Stir or shake [th]e glass well and when it hath it hath
been [soe sunned] strain [th]e said oyle and crush [th]e flowers
very hard [tha]t all [th]e strength may be in [th]e oyle [the]n take
anoth[e]r pint of flow[e]rs & doo as before for oth[e]r 15 days
& when they are expired take one another pint of flowers
[th]e third time & let [the]m be served as before [th]e space
of 40th days [the]n strain [the]m as before & let the Oyle
Soo strained stand untill all [th]e grass [residened]
be ffallen to [th]e bottome and [tha]t w[i]ch is above be
cleared, & of A clarret colour [the]n [th]e clearest
out so serve for [th]e use.
A Receit of Capt[ain] Greens if it be hummor cold
Take 8 [ounces] of red lead & 4 [ounces] of white lead & 5 [ounces] of casthe
soape [th]e powder must be beaten very fine & boyle
[the]m in a pint of [th]e oile of olives, when it is a
turned colour if it come of w[i]thout sticking to [the]m
fingers, then put into 1/2 an [ounce] of barrows grease & A
1/4 of an ounce of Oyl de Bay and let it boyl A
little after & then it riddy to dipp [th]e cloak all before.
In this you may dipp 2 cloaks one after another
& Smooth them al before.
A Fare & Excellent Salve to heal all burning by fire
Take a pint of [th]e Oyl of Olife, & put it into a new
Pipkin [the]n gather some Elder springs of a years groth
and of the biggness of a finger & a few leaves of [th]e
same w[i]th all: raise of[f] the upper bark and cast it away
[the]n take [the] 2d bark w[i]th is all green & full of sap whereof
safe of good M [] w[i]th [th]e leaves put into [th]e pipkin w[i]th [th]e
Oyl [the]n take some leaves of [th]e plantain & as much
[hous] leek. All with pour into [th]e pipkin & put to these A
6th part of very strong vinegar & A little wine and
about two inches of A tallow and so let all those boyl
let all the together at a soft fire about 1/2 an hour stirring
[the]m now and then; then strain [the]m through a siving cloak.
& put [tha]t w[i]th is strain'd
