Original, handwritten diary of Ellen Stabler of Sandy Spring, Md. dated from January 1st to December 17th, 1860. Ellen Stabler (1834-1924) was a life-long resident of Sandy Spring, Md and member of the Sandy Spring Friends Meeting (Quaker). She never married and lived most of her life in the family’s home called Auburn.

11th . A rainy day; Father came home from Baltimore and brought Richard Vaughn, the Shingle machine man with him; Father and I went to the funeral; Warwick Stabler here to supper.

12th. Vaughn went back to Baltimore. Father and mother went to Uncle Samuels to supper; rained in the morning; cleared up in the afternoon.

13th. A pleasant day: a shower of rain in the afternoon. Lucy went to Uncle Samuels: I went to Sherwood a while in the afternoon; Joe went to Charlie Stablers to dinner, brought William Stabler home with him to supper: William went to Rockland, Father called at Sherwood in the afternoon.

17th. A beautiful day: Aunt Nancy and Margaret here to supper: Father and mother went to Bentleys after supper: Father went to R. Down'ses in the morning. Joe went to Washington.

15th. A pleasant day; Father went to Rockville; I called at Bentleys in the afternoon, and went to Sherwood to supper; no one at home there but Annie.

16th. A clear day: At meeting: Father took mother to the Cottage in the afternoon, then went to B. Downses. Lucy and I at Uncle Edwards after supper; Lucy at the store in the afternoon.

17th. A cloudy day: Lucy went to Brooke Grove; called at Sharon in the evening and saw cousin Lizzie Briggs, she got here today.

18th. A cloudy day: Father went to Washington and home again in the evening: I spent the day and night at Cherry Grove: Joe went to Washington; Annie Peirce and Martha Lea called here: Margaret Hallowell went home yesterday.

19th. A beautiful clear morning: a shower in the afternoon: Nicholas Snowden here to dinner; Father went to Henry Harris's in the morning: to Higgins in the afternoon: I called at Sherwood on my way home from Cherry Grove; mother at Aunt Sally Gilpins to tea: Lucy at the Cottage: the boys at a public Debate in the evening.

25th. A pleasant day; father at work on the Baltimore road in the morning; home to dinner, and at the Steam Mill in the afternoon. Sarah Bentley here awhile after dinner; she went with Lucy and me to the Mill to see the Shingle Machine at work: Carrie Bond and Mary Leadbeater here to supper; William walked home with them after tea: then came back to Richard Bentleys to stay all night; there last night too; Richard and Edith both in B. father went to Sherwood to supper, with Vaughn and Abbott.

26th. Cloudy morning; a gust in the afternoon rained for two hours; father went to Ann Downs's in the morning:

27th. A pleasant morning: At Meeting; William Stabler here to dinner. William at Olney, with Mary Leadbeater; Joe went to Annie Peirce; home to supper: Joe at Harewood after supper. Cloudy in the afternoon; a little rain.

28th. A beautiful clear day: Father went to B. Downs's; took me to Clifton on his way; after dinner, Sarah and I went to see Mary E. Moore; then I called with Aunt R. to see Jane Johnson a colored woman who is sick; then I called at Uncle
