Original, handwritten diary of Ellen Stabler of Sandy Spring, Md. dated from January 1st to December 17th, 1860. Ellen Stabler (1834-1924) was a life-long resident of Sandy Spring, Md and member of the Sandy Spring Friends Meeting (Quaker). She never married and lived most of her life in the family’s home called Auburn.

7th. A cloudy morning: cleared off at noon; father went to Rockville again; Albert Palmer died last night at ten o clock; his brother Edward and wife came up yesterday Hannah Stabler came here from meeting, Aunt Ann and Robert came to supper.

8th A thunder shower in the morning; Joe, Lucy and myself attended the funeral of Albert Palmer in the afternoon; William set up with the corpse last night. Carrie and Willie Bond, and Elleanor Hough, and Charlie Stabler here to supper; Joe, Lucy and William went with them to Lecture after supper: B. Hallowell lectured.

9th. A clear day: Lucy went to the Cottage last night from lecture; home this afternoon: Father came home from Rockville; I called at Aunt Sallys, and at Sherwood;

10th. Father and mother went to Baltimore. Joe took them to Laurel. Walter Brooke here to supper: Aunt Polly was taken sick a week ago, today, and has been quite poorly ever since.

11th. A clear day: Lucy went to the Cottage from meeting: William to Clifton: Joe at Uncle Edwards in the afternoon Debbie Stabler here from Harewood; I went to Harewood after supper.

12th. A pleasant day, until evening when it turned cold; Debbie Stabler dined here, went to Harewood again to supper and here after supper to go home with her

14th. A clear pleasant day; Father went to Rockville Lucy to William Moore's; I called to see Kate in the morning;

15th. A clear pleasant day; Father at Uncle Samuels, Clifton, Core's, Ashton and Sandy Spring store in the morning; I went to Uncle Samuel's in the afternoon; called at Robert Moores and Ashton on my way home;

Lucy staid last night at the Cottage, and went with Aunt Jane to Uncle Edward Thomas's today; Warwick Stabler here to supper, went with William to Dr. Palmer after supper.

16th. A clear pleasant day; Father went to Washington; Lizzie Tyson came for Lucy in the afternoon; Joe went to Phils after supper.

17th. A pleasant day; I went to the store in the afternoon. Father came home from Washington; A public Debate this evening.

18th. John & Alice Stabler & Mary Coffin here to dinner

Phil came to supper and took Mary Coffin home. Lucy came home from Grove Hill; Gideon Gilpin and Arthur here in the afternoon; Uncle Samuel and Aunt Lizzie called before meeting; Aunt Lizzie staid whilst the others went to meeting: William went to Alexandria this morning.

19th. A rainy day; William came home from Alexandria.

20th. A clear pleasant day: Lucy went to Grove Hill Father went to Washington; Joe to Washington; I went to Harewood after supper.

21st. Father went to Brookeville in the afternoon to Isaac Hartshornes to supper; Arthur here after supper
