Original, handwritten diary of Ellen Stabler of Sandy Spring, Md. dated from January 1st to December 17th, 1860. Ellen Stabler (1834-1924) was a life-long resident of Sandy Spring, Md and member of the Sandy Spring Friends Meeting (Quaker). She never married and lived most of her life in the family’s home called Auburn.

22d. A very windy day: Aunt Lizzie spent the day here; Lucy came home from Grove Hill in the afternoon; a meeting of the Directors of the Library company here in the afternoon; Esther Wetherald, Sophie Peirce and Frances Stabler here; Frances staid to supper. Joe came home from Alexandria.

myself went to Uncle Edwards in the afternoon; after supper, Brother, Lucy, William and myself spent the evening at Uncle Edwards.

26th. A clear day; Brother dined at Uncle Samuels, came home after dinner and went to Brooke Grove with Eddie Stabler; mother and father at Uncle Samuels in the afternoon.

27th. Father went to Rockville: I went to Uncle Samuels in the afternoon: came to Bentleys after supper to come home with Brother; he was there to tea: Kate called here after dinner.

28th. A clear day; went to meeting: Father went to John Stablers in the afternoon, took brother to cousin Richard Brookes;

after supper, Father, mother and brother went to Aunt Sally's. after Lucy went to Uncle Samuels in the afternoon and to the Cottage to stay all night, I went to Harewood in the afternoon.

29th. A splendid clear day; Father went to Ellicotts Mills Brother went to Uncle Calebs on his way home; cousin Isabella Brooke called here in the morning:

30th. A clear warm day; Father took brother and myself to Laurel in the two horse carriage; father went into B. and home again that evening: I was at the sewing society in the evening;

31st. Spent 3 hours with Anne Ahrens in the morning, home to dinner; to Gardners to tea and to stay all night.

4th. mo. 1st. Back to sisters before meeting; called with Mary Gardner after meeting, to see Hettie Newcomer: company at sisters in the evening; Jennie Reese has a daughter this morning.

2d. Went out to Avondale in the evening, after runing about town all the morning.

3d. Henrietta, Mary, Helen and myself spent the day very pleasantly with at Birmingham; with Juliana, Lizzie and Theodore Jenkins, John Snowden and Lizzie Hopkins.

4th. I made a delaine dress for Lucy: I had a letter from Debbie Stabler.

5th. A pretty bright day; I made a dress for Helen: had a letter from Aunt Lizzie

6th. A bright clear day: A letter from home telling that Aunt Lizzie was sick. Henrietta, Emily, Lucy and myself spent the afternoon at John McPhersons.

7th Father dined at Avondale. A letter from Aunt Lizzie this home this morning telling that Aunt Lizzie was sick. Henry Snowden came out. Emilys birth day; the children had a party.

8th. I went to Church in the afternoon with Edward and Mary.
