Original, handwritten diary of Ellen Stabler of Sandy Spring, Md. dated from January 1st to December 17th, 1860. Ellen Stabler (1834-1924) was a life-long resident of Sandy Spring, Md and member of the Sandy Spring Friends Meeting (Quaker). She never married and lived most of her life in the family’s home called Auburn.

27th A beautiful clear day; William met mother at Olney in the evening, and brought her home.

28th. Joe finished planting corn. Father came home from Baltimore; says brother and family moved into the country today: Kate called here in the afternoon; Lucy went with her to Alban Gilpins.

29th. A beautiful clear day; Lucy went to Alexandria with Uncle Edward in the afternoon. Phil, Charlie, and Warwick Stabler called here in the afternoon. Joe and I went to Rockland to tea. Uncle Samuel and Aunt Lizzie here after tea.

30th A beautiful clear day: Aunt Lizzie and I dined at Charlie Stablers, and took tea at Roberts; I got a letter from Sue Taylor

5th. mo. 1st. A cloudy day: Father went to Rockville.

2d. A rainy day: went to meeting: Preparative meeting: Aunt Lizzie served as clerk for the first time: Annie Marshall her mother, Aunt Hannah Kervey and Frank Bishop came.

3d. A cloudy day: Father and Aunt Lizzie went to B. and home again in the evening: A lecture at the Lyceum.

in the evening: Robert Ould of Washington. Kate spent the evening here: mother went to see cousin Henny Bentley in the afternoon; she is very ill.

4th. A clear warm day; I went to see Annie Marshall after dinner; she is just as lovely as ever: Aunt Nancy came home; brought Margaret with her: I went to see them after supper.

5th. Father went to Uncle Toms and about in that neighbourhood in the morning, and to Higgins in the afternoon; I went to Sherwood after dinner then to Uncle Samuel's to supper; and found Nicholas and Henrietta here, when I came home: Margaret and Aunt Mar Nancy called in the afternoon;

6th. A clear warm day: Mary Miller, Fred and William Stabler here to dinner; William and Warwick here to tea; Uncle Samuel, Aunts, Lizzie and Jane here in the afternoon, also Kate and James Shephard: Nicholas and Henrietta left directly after supper, and Father and mother went to Dr. Palmers: Joe to Falling Green: William to Isaac Hartshornes to tea.

7th. Father went to Washington and Alexandria; I cleaned mine and the boys room; M.E. Moore and Sarah Thomas called here. A very warm day; clouded up in the evening.

8th. A clear pleasant day; I called at Sherwood in the afternoon; and to see Juliet Cook: Father and Lucy came home, from Alexandria.

9th. A rainy day: Father went to Baltimore; cousin Henny much worse; they sent for cousin Mary Brown she got up this evening: monthly meeting.

10th A cloudy day; a gust in the evening; Cousin Henny died this morning; William went for Fred Moore. Jule Hood here helping me clean the dining room and kitchen. Joe went to Uncle Toms in the morning; a lecture in the morning.
