Original, handwritten diary of Ellen Stabler of Sandy Spring, Md. dated from January 1st to December 17th, 1860. Ellen Stabler (1834-1924) was a life-long resident of Sandy Spring, Md and member of the Sandy Spring Friends Meeting (Quaker). She never married and lived most of her life in the family’s home called Auburn.

9th. A cloudy day; a gust in the evening: Laura Brook and her husband spent the day at Avondale: Lizzie, Theodore and Mary Eliza Jenkins called in the afternoon.

10th. A rainy day: Mary read aloud to us; spent two hours in her room in the afternoon. mothers birth day

11th. Cleared off this morning; a beautiful bright evening. I made a dress for Helen.

12th. A beautiful clear day: Mary, all the children and nurse and myself took a walk in the morning: Edward & Mary Herbert came to tea; Father came out from Baltimore, to stay all night.

13th. Mahlon Kirk died this morning. A clear windy day: father brought me home; called to see how Aunt Lizzie is; she is nearly well again: fathers birthday: Lucy and I went to the store and called to see Aunt Sally:

14th. Anne Ahrens birth day. A cloudy morning: a beautiful clear evening: I spent the afternoon at Cherry Grove: Fred Stabler is sick.

15th. A beautiful clear day: William Stabler and Charlie Brooke dined here: Warwick called; Bennie Miller came from the funeral and spent the evening; Lucy went to the Cottage from the funeral.

16th. Father sent cows to Charlie Brooke, some he sold to him yesterday

Hoxie came in the stage; Lucy came home from the Cottage. A rainy morning; cloudy in the afternoon.

17th. A clear warm day: father and Lucy went to Annapolis; home in the evening; Hoxie went to Laurel with them; mother called to our cousin Henny; she came home last 7th day.

18th. A clear cool day; cousin Sarah and Anna Farquhar and Debbie Howell spent the day here: father went to Rockville after meeting: Joe took the big ox to the Butcher near Laurel, who came yesterday and bought him. Lucy and I at Harewood after supper.

19th. mother went to William Moores to dinner, William Kinnards

20th. mother came from Clifton to Uncle Samuels this afternoon, father met her there: Joe went to Washington; Louise Thomas spent the day here: father went to Barcrofts sale yesterday.

21st. A clear warm day: father went to Higgins; Kate came home; I went to see her after supper; Lucy went to Grove Hill.

22nd. A cool cloudy day; Uncle Thomas, Debbie and Asa Stabler dined here; Phil came in the afternoon a while, Uncle Samuel called; Joe and I went to Harewood after supper: heard that cousin Henny is very sick.

24th. Father went to Rockville; Lucy came home from Grove Hill.

25 A clear day: Joe begun to plant corn. Father went to Barcrofts for his cows: Lucy went to Olney: Joe went for her after supper. B. Hallowell at meeting preached.

26th. Father went to Baltimore; mother went to Olney in the stage, to go tomorrow to see cousin Mary Hall. Kate here in the afternoon.
