My dear Sir,
Col. Geo. H. Morrison is getting up a sketch of my life for Bancroft's history. He has asked me to request you to furnish some data.
You have known me so long and intimately that I think you could furnish him with some facts of interest. Perhaps you can also help him out with an analysis of my character.
Yours truly
Leland Stanford

something akin to the taste which makes us determine the value of a fine picture. I had the impression that Lucy Cuyler had been relieved from active service and that perhaps her only value was a commercial one as a brood mare. Her mother I regard as one of the very choicest brood mares on my place, except in her age. Her produce has been unfortunate in development but has shown a speed and valuable characteristics equal to the produce of any other.
I wish I understood your

power of reducing a swelling of the legs.
I do not wonder at all that you desire to retain Lucy, and had I understood how you value her I would not have made the proposition I did, but I think there has never been the equal of [Lunol? Surrol?]
Hoping some day to have the pleasure of meeting you in New York, or possibly at Palo Alto,
I remain
Very truly yours

My dear Sir,
Your favor of the 10th inst: via California, has reached me here in Washington.
I read it with great interest. Of course in making my proposition I knew nothing of the circumstances [insert] aside from her speed [/insert] which cause you to value Lucy Cuyler so highly. I do not wonder that you have no wish to part with her. There are some animals whose price is in no manner based upon an ordinary commercial value, but depends rather upon

Congress having directed an inquiry into the equities between the Government & the R. R. Cos. must be content to abide by them. The proof is clear and can not be contradicted, that instead of the Co. owing the Govt. anything, the Govt. equitably is largely indebted to the Cos. I think
