(by about 2 points each night).

Neither John nor Buster plaged any place. I am particularly sorry for John. Buster, I believe, didn't expect to get into a fraternity, but John through that he would go S.A.E., but for some reason he didn't. Alex Robertson didn't plege any fraternity either.

I have to study now.

Love,

Johnny

Dear Mother & Dad:

I had some disappointments today. First of all I got a D- in an English [?]. I am having a hard time in there. Secondly I lost in the first round of the [Fresh?] tournament, which was pretty bad. (5-7, 6-0, 6-2). I had gone to bed at 2:00, 1:30, & 1:30 the three nights before that. I don't like to make excuses, but I don't think that I was in the best of shape. Still all that the coach knows is that I lost and so I'll have to go up the ladder the hard way.

I received 2 letters, dated the 21 & the 22. I was surprised to hear about all [last] [?] tests in one day, that tough.

Everything is set as far as the coming down with June in the Jeep is concerned if you will let me. Dick H. and Nancy are coming also. We intend to

leave here at 3:00 P.M., Fri. Nov. 9. Nancy bringing some other boy down to [?].

Tell Betty to learn her World Culture, if the [event?] comes here she will need it. This Western Civ. is a very tough course. We are going to have a test on next tues. thru Rome (from Agean Empire to-). The subject is good, but you have quite a lot of reading to do (Plutarch's Lives, Plato, etc.) Aristotle "Ethics" is the worst so far.

Tell Betty that I am up 3rd conjugation, present, imperfect, and Indicative Active. We take a lesson a day.

We have quite a good flash team, and we play U.C.L.A. tomorrow. (Wes played 12 min. of the S.C. game).

I hope that my Army blanket gets here soon. It gets pretty cold at night now. It is warm enough if we shut the window, but I like it open if possible.

Johnny is in the rest Home for some reasor or other.

Did you [read?] of [Philip?] [?] of Point Sun? Some of the fellas in my wing have stayed up all night on occasion, I hope I never have to.

Talk about Thanksgiving when I see you,

(got all checks, thanks) - Johnny

29 January

Dear Mon, Dad, Lori, Murray, Trapper, Ringo, [G?] [G?]! Thank you for the telegram Lori & Muray - that was great. Hope finals went ok etc. Its sat. morning - tonight is the "Doctor's Ball" which I'm opening and tomorrow we leave for the Soviet Union. You asked to explain this ball [?]. For this one there are about 80-100 couples - guys in tails, guys in white - all w/gloves etc. all are young - 17-22 or so approx. We are signed up by Stanford and Im no sure how the others do it - maybe not sign-up or are Dr's kids etc. I think those who are opening on for their 1st time are the "deb" types. We had rehersal twice this week. We march in after everyone is in the ballroom (300-400 people??). Then when the orchestra starts we have this dance/ceremony type thing - where we curtsy for all the dignitaries/honored guest when they walk in the Austria Chancellor was supposed to be there last week but couldn't make it. This curtsy bit is hand - like doing deep knee bends oncr again - my imporper upbringing hasn't fully prepared me for the life of a socialite. We finish our stuff - about 20 mins or so. It's really a beautiful thing - esp when we'll all be in black/white. The girls in ours have to wear these crown things and the guys carry these big sticks w/ vines and flowers on it - we use it in our dance. Then when its done we all have the 1st waltz and then everyone else joins in. There are 4 or 5 bands in different ballrooms - the place is incredible. Hope my pics turn out. We're all (6 couples) opening w/ Stanford people. Luckily my partner, Scott [Gude?], is great in German so he can translate our dance routine instructions. This one goes till 5 am but since we leave tomorrow I don't know how late we'll stay. The [?] had their daughters wedding dress shortened for me! It's beautiful. They are the nicest family and have done so much for me - I've had dinner there a bunch [?] too. Please ask [?] for suggestions for a nice gift for them - maybe something from there like a book on San Francisco or something? Well - on Thurs night I was at the symphony - hrard a "Hi Chrissie" and turned round to find Susan Huntsinger standing there!!! I knew she was coming through sometime but we met by total coincidence! She'd just gotten in that afternoon. She's coming to the ball tonight now! She [?] Paris etc and its great to see her - asked about all of you. Last night I had dinner with my "Austrian Family" so i couldn't do anything w/ her and her 3 traveling companions (guys). We each get a "family" and mine is a couple who lives on the outskirts who arent very well off but are the most generous, sweet people - The [Baumgartners?]. Another girl, Jule, and i go over for dinner once a week. last week i learned how to make wiener schnitzel. They speak basically no English but we get on just fine. They've been taking in Stanford students for 13 years - have had 25 kids! Hope my writing isn't too small. You two better still be planning to visit me in England - I'm counting on it! On Monday Shiela and I went to an English play

in a threatre around the corner. One night is a case we happened to meet the star of the play (arsenic and old lace) and she got us great tix and had us backstage afterwards etc. She was great, and it was a nice change to hear a play in English. Oh mom I know its $$$ to send stuff, but is there any way you can send me V-nec beige sweater? If it's too much then don't, but I got some new boots that are that color and you want me to look "put together" don't you! The stores close at 12 sat so Im off to get my supply of food for Russia - everyone says all they got there was potatoes and cucumbers and bread that bounced. I'll smuggle in some oranges or is that a western influence? Our teachers know we cant take any books in - so no homework can be done! Too bad! I'm not sure if I told you Bob Fritz's friends are great - have 5 kids - ages 1½ - 20. I might go to Innsbruck w/ the 20 yr old and her friends one weekend in March. They also have 3 horses play tennis etc. The girl my age wants to live in the US to learn English - she should live w/ us seriously - she's great & then wants to go to a U.S. med school. - mit vielen herzlichen gripen - Diene - Chrissie
