Dear Dad and Mother

I have been very busy lately and that is why I haven't writen (written) lately. Due to the rushing, etc., my studies sort of road (rode) along on hot air, and from now till the end of the quarter I will be very busy; However, I will write as much as possible. To supplement my letters for the rest of the quarter will be the Stanford Daily, which you probably will be getting about the same time as receive this letter. I have really got to pour the coal on my studies now if I want to go any place.

To [?] an example of poor things that happen & rushing, i will tll you about the boy in the room adjacent to ours. His name is Al Mengent, and he has one (won) of the National Junior Golf Championships twice running. Even though he is a first quarter freshman now. (You are not supposed to be rushed until at least a 2nd QT. [flash?] ; Inter-fraterntity Council rule), he was rushed by the Alpha Deltas, Dekes, Sigma Chi's, Phi Delts, and I don't know how many

others. he had a whole drawer full of pins and, i believe, pleged several of them. Why couldn't a guy like John Jenkins who is 10 times the man that Mengentt is be accepted by one of the many fraternities that Mengent must inevitably turn down? It's a tough situation.

Our wing won its first basketball game that night by defeating wing 4E 21 - 14. I played the whole game. (only 3 points).

Dad: Not to discourage you, but I heard that in Intra-[?] competition A▲Ø was defeated 5-8 & 61-3 by the Dekes & the Phi. Delts respectively.

I just received your check. I hope that I won't have to use it in the near future. Thank you for sending it.

I am trying to get some picture of Stanford (colored) to send as a much delayed birthday gift to Nan. As soon as I can get a hold of some I will send them. Would you please send my picture of Stanford back as soon as it is convenient?

The Stanford - Bradley game the other night was one of the most exciting I have ever seen. you probably read about it in the Daily I sent to you.

This week end we are playing U.C.L.A. (Friday) & U.S.C. (Saturday) I am going to both of them.

I am going to play another challenge match Friday. I hope I win!

Thank you for the article and all the clippings - they were very interesting. Congratulate Betty for me. Thank Albert for sending me that letter - wish I could have been there. Say hello to Betty, Francis, Nana, & everyone for me - love, Johnny.

Room 228, Encina Hall, Stanford, Calif. 10:43 P.M. Sept. 29, 1947.

Dear Dad, thes is registration day:

This morning I got up bout 5:45. My roommates got up about the same time and at their breakfast of frozen pineapple and frozen peaches and mild that we had bought last night in P aly in order that they would not have to eat breakfast, and therefore get over to the registration building early enough to get he classes that they wanted.

It didn't make any particular difference to me because Ihad to hash at 6:30 anyway, but i finished off Buse's pinapple because I ws pretty hungry. After they had left (they latter said that there were over 200 people over tere by 5:30, so you can see what it ment to get over there early!

I staid in bed until about five after six and then I got up and took a shower, shaved, put on a white shirt, levis, and a tie, and went down to set the counter for breakfast (I anly set up the line, tha t is putting out the food for the hashers in the morning. The rest of the time ,at noon anddinner, I work on the linesearving the milk, and keeping the silver filled. I report for hashing at 6a.m., 12a.m., and five 30a.m, and eat then. A half a hour after that I work for about half an hour.

After I had finished hashing I ran over to the addministration building where I went to the end of a line that went from the Add. building around the history corner. I thought that it was long then (there must have been about 400 in front off me), but you should have seen it about an hour later. It stretched out of sight behind me. After standing in line about an hour and a half I finally got to the window where I recieved my registration book.

At this point I would like to explain a little about the registration. First (over)

I saw Gloria Teague, & my roommate ??rius Milse Martin

of all you were supposed to make out a course which had enough units and the courses that you were supposed to take. Next you were supposed to get your reg. book and take it to your counsellor, who would o.k. it. The next ,and the most important part, was to [?] your seat cards. You probably know all about that, and so I wont go into it. After that you sign up for gym, get your picture taken, pay your tuition fees, and then return your reg. book. Then if you have survived all of that you are in the university.

Our counsellors told us to hurry in everything that we did so that we could get the classes that we wanted.

After I had gotten my reg. book I had my picture taken ,and then I ran over to my ounselor, Prof Jeffery Smith, and had him approve my course. It was there that I found out that I had passed the English A Exam. After having my course looked over I ran aver to room 214, where you recieved your seat cards.

There I had to wait in line about an hour longer. When i jinally reached the desks many of the mon. wed. fri., morning classes were closed, but I finally rigged up the fairly good course that I have enclosed.

After finishing with the seat cards I beat it over to the gym and signed up there. Next I paid my tuition $11,167.00. Then I turned in the book and went back to Encin a.

That was about 2:30 P.M. (I had hashed in the some where).

I have paid three bills, my tuition, bought a quad, and bought my books, ($167.00, $5.75, and $21.00), so watch out for my checks!

After dinner I played billiards for about an hour and a half, played some bridge, made my bed and then started on this letter.

I am - one army blanket, and my jacket. I may have left it in the car or at Io19, if it is at home will you please mail to me.

I wish that you would put away the enclosed for me.

Why don't you write to me?

Yours,

Johnny (handwritten)

P.S. I know that there alot of mistakes in this letter ,but I am not going to fix them because I want to go to bed. Besides this typewriter doesn't work very well.

Dear Dad and Mother:

I have gone [greek symbol] as you already know I hope and I think that I will enjoy it there. Last night they had a dance up at the house which was very nice. In the afternoon they had a football game in which the [active?] claim to have won 12-6. Actually it was a tie as several of our men had returned to the sidelines for refreshment when they threw their touchdown pass.

I would have like to have gone into the [greek symbols], naturally, but they did not ask me. However, the Phi Psis are alright by me so far. Doug, especially, has been very nice to me and has helped me quite a lot, in fact he was the one who fixed me up with a date for the dance last night. Coincidentally, she was the daughter of the assistant director of Physical Education and of of the swimming coaches, [Myriam?] [Sprague?].

Doug said that Sally is standing up now. I wish that you could send me a bit of family birthdays, etc. i will send something to nana soon.

It really was terrible about the President, Dr. Tresidder. I wonder who will be the new President?

Stanford has won 2 basketball games in the last 2 days. They beat College of the Pacific & U.S.F. Both games were fairly close
