Wild Flax — Didynam. Angiosperma nearly like Antirrhinm [Antirrhinum] Hill. Toad flax — well described by Withering —

Calyx — a very small permanent perianth, 5 linear erect segts

Corol — cylind — tube one petal — gaping — Upper lips cloven lower lip reflected, divided into 3 segts or rather lobes — white and circular — Palet convex — the mouth closed by a projecto. of ye lower lip. concave & chaneled under side.

Stam — 4 filments (2 longer & 2 shorter) longest shorter than tube of ye Corol — Anthera connivent —

Pistel — Germen roundish, Style cylind. of ye length of ye shorter filmaents. Styma capitate.

Seeds Globular capsule, containing numerous angular seeds —

6 Stalk — appears much life ye stalk of ye common flax, but not so large — round, smooth, 12 inch high —

Leaves — Radicle leaves, oblong, stand in a cluster on round foot stalks very small. Stalk leaves strap shaped — stand 2 or 3 together at lowr part stalk — upper leaves — stand alternate.

Flowers stand near ye top on short pedicles, alternate, of a bright purple —

Grows in old fields & side of ye rode. It seems to have an hair of some strength. Stalks smaller yn common flax

June 16th No. 144. Mistake — the root very different Orchis — fools Stones perhaps Helleborine — smell like it —

Sheath — a single oblong leaf adhering imbracing ye stalk by its base. — fruit stalk, cylind short

7 short —

Corol 5 oblong petals, Three outer — — 2 inner, ye inner ye broadest — erect from ye base of ye recepticle or apex of ye seed vessel.

Honey cups one leaf — reflected & mergin curved in wards — ye inner disk filled with yellow oblong protuberances laying along ye rib of ye leaf & ye mergin stretches with deep red — ye claw adheres to ye recepticle of ye leaves — between ye lower division of ye petals. inclosing ye style at its base.

# like a tongue along a very long under jaw. ye margen of leaf is turned up & serrated with very find teeth. This may be Hill's [cornculed?] nectarium & Withering " tube like horn — but think it cannot.

Stam. 2 very find short filaments — rising on one side of ye top of ye style — Anthera but one very large angular & irregular, opens in tow cells — & turns down on ye top of ye stigma on a kind of hinge & into a kind of socket concealing ye cells, by means of ye two filaments — or rather these 2 threads serve as an hing to turn it up where the 2 cells appear of a yellow colour.

8 Pistil — Style cylind — with a deep grove on ye seed next ye nectarium leaf — Stigma sessile

Am not certain but wt I take to be ye style is called Nectarium or ye Horn by Hill & Withering. but nothing at hinder part —

Very much doubt whether it be ye sam they have discribed.

Seed — Oblong capsule, below ye flower, & on short pedali above ye Spatheal leaf. with 6 groves — it stands inclining — under= =side flatish with 2 groves uper= convex — formed much like yt of ye Ladies Slpper.

Seeds —

Roots — 2 bulbs (mistake) Vide observa: last year The root consists of 5 or 6, straw like, fibres sent out, horozontally, with some smaller fibres — long & spreading

Stalks rises from ye end of one of ye a root segt — runs down 1 inch & yn turns horizon. bulb — no (radical leaves that like ye leaf on ye stalk leaf but soon perishes Stalk have seeds. round — erect — & succulent — of ye size of a large kniting

9 knitting needle — Stalk leaves not more yn one or two oblong imbracing ye stalk by its unguis — 1 inch long 4/10 in broad.

The flower stands soletary on ye top of ye stalk. of a pale read bordering on a peach= blossom colour.

Grows in cold mossy meddows & some times on ye moist shores. Petals of corol — nervose — Upon Examo. am at a loss wh genus of this Class it belongs to.

June 18th No. 145 — Yellow Weed — or Choack — all from Danvers — Diadelphia Decand —

[Calin?] — Tube, composed of one leaf — cylindrical — segts 5 — erect — accumi. — 2 upper broader — 3 lower narrower

Calyx — Butterfly-shaped — Standard — Orbicular, compressed, emerginated. reflected back — Wings — oblong, apex turned down on
