30 Oenothera of Hill

Calyx — a very long slender cylindrical tube of one leaf — divided into 5 oblong narrow deep segments, when ye flower is blooming one of ye divisions opens in form of a spatha ye others still adhering, but if they seperate all ye segts become reflex.

Corol — 4 orbicular, inversely ovate petals, inserted, just within ye tube, patent before they expand are twisted round in a spiral form.

Stam — 8 subulated erect filaments shorter than petals. Anthera oblong stand horizontal —

Pistil. Germen below ye tube — Style filiform rise from longer than Stam. Stigma divided into four parts, oblong, spreading.

Seeds — Capsule, oblong blunt at apex — quadrangular — seeds ovate

31 ovate, very small, adhering to ye Columella.

Roots fibrous —

Stalks round, firm 12 or 18 inch high — redish cast — The leaves stand alternat, erect, near together — oblong & narrow — 2 inch long & 3/10 in wide, very smooth. In ye ala of these lives stand 2 very small similar leaves spreading each way.

The flower is a bright yellow rise, near the top, from ye ala of ye leaves & soletary. but at the top stand thick & form a kind of spike but not more than one or 2 are in bloom at a time. The They close at night & open & expand agn near ye middle of ye day.

The grow in wet land found them in ye river meadow this side of Nat Appletons —

Seed — ye germena are round & very small —

Stalk — slender, 4 square, 12 or 18 inch high, procumbent, covered with very find shorted hooking spines — not to be distinctly seen by ye naked eye. 34 Root — long tapering, runing obliquely — whitish

Leves — Radical leaves are commonly 4 or 5 — long narrow pedicles — ye leaf oblong, very slightly indented in margen. The leaf it self — without stem 3 inch long 1 3/4 wide — smooth — dark green with ye stem 4 1/2 inch long —

Stalk — rises 6 inch high naked, except one or 2 very small leaf — not more yn 2/10 inch long 1/2 of 1/10 wide — round, small — ye flowers stand along ye top in a loose spike, on short pedicles, alround ye stalk, of a whitish green colour.

It grows in shaddy wood land, in a rich soil — I take this to be wt is called in Connecticut Rate snake planting — ye leaf being applied to ye bite etc
