The Senate met and was constituted.

The minutes of the meetings held Jan 19th and Feb 7th 1878 were read and approved.

[margin] A. McTaggart not to be examined for B.A. [/margin]

In reference to the applicaiton from Alphonse McTaggart the Senate having found from his letter of Feb. 1st that he had attended College only one full session and part of a second, instructed the Clerk to inform him that as his College attendance was not equal to what is required of graduates by this University, he cannot be admitted to the examination for the ad eundem degree of B.A.

[margin] elecutionary examinations [/margin]

The Senate agreed to meet on Saturday 20th of April at ten o'clock A.M. in Convocation Hall for the purpose of hearing the competitors for the eloctionary prizes - competitors to give their names to the Secretary on or before the 18th of April. The Senate appointed Profs. Mowat and Ferguson a Committee to select two pieces, one serious and the other humorous to be read by the competitor.

final examinations in Medicine be held on the undermentioned days at two o'clock P.M. in Convocation Hall, and that each written examination be conducted by two examiners according to the following arrangements.

Tuesday Mar. 19 Materia Medica Drs. Lavell and Fowler Wednesday 20 Practice of Medicine. Drs Oliver and Yates Thursday 21 Chemistry. Dr. Fenwick & Prof. Dupuis Friday 22 Surgery Drs. Dupuis & Sullivan Monday 25. Anatomy. Drs. Sullivan & Dupuis Tuesday 26 Obstetrics. Drs. Fowler & Lavell Wednesday 27. Institutes of Medicine Drs Yates & Oliver Thursday 28 Prac. Chem & Jurisprud. Prof Dupuis & Dr Fenwick

The aforementioned examiners were also appointed to examine the theses of intending graduates in medicine as they may arrange among themselves and to report to the Senate.

[margin] Subjects of theses by McKillop & McLaren approved [/margin]

The Senate approved of the subject of Thesis proposed by Charles McKillop B.A. viz: The religious tendencies of the age; and of that proposed by J.B. McLaren B.A. viz "Words and their inner lives".

The Senate was instructed to call public attention through the College Journal to the changes in the day of holding the statutory meeting of Senate for conferring degrees, and in that of the meeting of Convocation.

The Senate adjourned to meet on Sataurday 16th at three P.M.

[margin] petition anent earlier closing of classes refused [/margin]

In reference to a Petition from 55 students requesting a change in the times of closing the classes and beginning the University examination, the Senate passed the following minute:

The Senate regret if the students shall find the arrangment referred to inconvenient, but having made it after careful consideraiton, and the Professors having planned their work in accordance with it, consider it inexpedient to make the change requested, especially in view of the the announcement in the fourth paragraph of the 13th page of the Calendar.

In compliance with the request of F.F.Mcnab B.A. the Senate agreed to extend the time of receiving his Thesis for M.A. till April 17th.

The minutes of the last two meetings held 16th and 19th ult. were read and approved.

[margin] Application from Moore & P.M. Pollock [/margin]

There were read letters from Messrs Moore and P.M. Pollock intimating that they desire to attend the classes of Junior mathematics and senior Greek next session, and that according to the new time table these classes meet at the same hour. The Senate agreed to suggest to them to defer attendance on the senior Greek class till the session after next.

In reference to an application from W.E. D'Argent the Senate refused to reckon as a session his attendance at the classes of natural philosopy and natural science, having regard to the two

facts - that his attendance fell considerably short of the minimum required, and that a similar application was made and granted last session.

[margin] application from G. McArthur [/margin]

In compliance with an application from George McArthur it was agreed to allow him to attend the ensuing University examination in chemistry as he had been prevented by sickness from attending in October.

[margin] programme of Un. exam laid over [/margin]

A programme of the ensuing University examinations was laid before the Senate by the Committee appointed to prepare it. The Senate agreed before adopting it to have it placed on the notice board for a few days that they might ascertain whether any alterations would require to be made in it to prvent its conflicting with the necessary arrangements of any of the students.

[margin] inscription on gold medals [/margin]

The Senate agreed that the inscription on each gold medal shall consist of the name of the winner, and of the subject or department in which it has been won.

[margin] application from M. MKay anent time-table [/margin]

In reference to an intimation from Matthew McKay that he wished to take the French and Natural Philosophy classes next session, and that according to the new time-table these classes meet at the same hour. The Senate agreed that he be recommended either to take junior Hebrew instead of French next session or to defer applying for his degree till the session after next.
