[margin] Nov. 8th. 1877 arrangements for Elocution class [/margin]

curriculum required of its graduates.

A letter was read from D.C. Bell anent the arrangements for the Elocution class. The Senate appointed the hour from 4 to 5 P.M. for the meetings of the class and agreed to leave to Mr Bell's discretion the mode of conducting the class.

[margin] Applicaiton from M.L. Oxley [/margin]

A letter was read from M.L. Oxley asking to be allowed to come up to the examination in that subject next April, on the grounds that illness prevented him from preparing for the examination held at the opening of the present session. The Senate agreed to grant Mr. Oxley's request.

[margin] arrangements for Divinity class [/margin]

A letter was read from Dr. George Bell in regard to the Divinity Class, the charge of which had been given him by the Trustees during the first month of the session. The Senate agreed that the arrangments for the class be left to Dr. Bell and Prof. Mowat.

The Senate met and was constituted.

Sederunt Rev. George M Grant, M.A. recently elected Principal and Primarius Professor of Divinity, Professors Williamson, Mowat, Mackerras, Dupuis, Ferguson and Watson.

The minutes of the last meeting held November 3d were read and approved.

[margin] matriculants in theology [/margin]

It was found that the following students named in the order of merit had passed the matriculation examination in Theology viz.

Archibald A. Mackenzie Joseph F. White Gilbert C. Patterson James Cumberland

[margin] scholars in theology [/margin]

and that the scholarships in Theology had been gained as follows viz:

Leitch memorial (2) Archiblad A. Mackenzie

Dow - Joseph F. White Dominion - Gilbert C. Patterson Buchan (2) - James Cumberland

[margin] Curators of reading room [/margin]

There was read a minute of a meeting of the students held by appointment of Senatus which the following Curators of the Reading Room had been appointed viz. Hugh Taylor, James Ross, William Stewart, Hugh McMillan, J.R. Pollock.

[margin] J.N. Taft admitted ad eundem in chem. & Eng lit. [/margin]

In accordance with an applicaiton from J. N. Taft the Senate agreed to count his attendance of thirteen weeks at Syracuse University in chemistry and English literature as part of the attendance required of him in this University, so that he may come up for examination in these subjects next April.

It was agreed to consider at a subsequent meeting the subject of granting degrees in Arts on examination without the necessity of attendance in the classes.

The minutes of the meeting held Dec. 15 were read and approved

[margin] Mr Gallaher certificate in chemistry sustained [/margin]

There was read a certificate bearing that the Rev. John Gallaher had passed in the Chemistry Class at Magee College, Ireland. This certificate was sustained.

[margin] application from Rev. D. Kelso for B.A. [/margin]

There was read an application from the Rev D. Kelso for the degree of B.A. There were also read certificates bearing that Mr. Kelso had passed in philosophical and mathematical departments of Glasgow University. The Secretary was instructed to inform Mr. Kelso that in order to graduate he

will require to pass the examination in Latin, Greek, chemistry, and history or natural history.

[margin] Examiners of essays [/margin]

The competitive esssays were assigned to the Examiners as follows:

Modern doctrine of energy: Profs Williamson & Dupuis Galileo: Profs Williamson & Dupuis Brougham: Profs. Ferguson & Watson Descartes: Principal & Prof. Watson Lecture on Mat. VII 7-12: Profs. Mowat & Mackerras

[margin] D.D. for Rev Robert Sedgewick [/margin]

The Senate having made the necessary inquiries resolved that at the statutory meeting and on the usual conditions they would confer the degree of D.D. upon the Rev. Robert Sedgewick of Middle Musquodeboit.

The subject of conferring degrees on examination alone without class attendance was postponed to a future meeting.

The subject of a new time-table was considered and it was agreed to take it up again at a future meeting.

[margin] Changes in Calendar [/margin]

The Senate resolved that in the list of subjects for the matriculation examination in the Calendar the subject of classics be arranged as follows "(a) Latin - Virgil Aeneid, Bk II Cicero pre Leg. Manit; translation of English into Latin prose. "(b) Greek - Grammar: Lucian, Charon; Homer, Illiad, Bk I. Candidates may profess similar portions of other

"Classical works, but in so doing cannot compete for "rank or scholarships". The Senate agreed also to make the following change in the same part of the Calendar, viz.: That paragraph IV read as V, and that IV be as follows: "Candidates passing the above examination rank as under graduates; A Student passing in any subject may attend the Collegiate class connected with it and is eligible for a scholarship.

[margin] modern languages [/margin]

The subject of having an entrance examination in Modern Languages and of making the subject optional was considered, and Prof. Ferguson was requested to prepare a minute on the subject for the consideration of the Senate at a future meeting.

[margin] D.D. for Rev. Wm Fraser [/margin]

The Senate having made the necessary inquiries resolved that at the statutory time and on the usual conditions they would confer the degree of D.D. upon the Rev. William Fraser of Bondhead.

[margin] Hugh MacIntosh [/margin]

On account of the serious illness of Hugh Mackintosh, and the importance of his returning to his friends without delay, the Senate agreed to authorize the payment of the second half of his scholarship immediately, and also agreed to count this as a full session to him.

The subject of graduation without attendance was resumed and its further consideration postponed.

[margin] A. McTaggart, B.A. applies ad eundem [/margin]

In reference to an application from Alpheus McTaggart A.B. of Earlham College Indiana, the Senate agreed to admit him ad eundem provided that he present satisfactory certificates of having passed in all the subjects required for graduation in this University, and also that he pass an examination in mathematics and English next spring.

The Senate met and was constituted.

[margin] Suggestions to A.M.S. event of demonstration [/margin]

There was read a memorandum of certain questions connected with a proposed demonstration at the end of the session as to which the Alma Mater Society desired the opinion and advice of the Senate. These questions were answered by the Senate as follows:

1. "Should there be a demonstration at the end of the present session?" The Session leaves this point to the decision of the A.M.S.

2. "If advisable should such be in the form of conversazione, or supper or banquet?". The Senate leaves this point to the decision of the A.M.S.

3. "If conversazione, should it be held in the Convocation Hall or City and Ontario Halls?" The Senate is of opinion that if a demonstration is decided upon, it should be held in the College buildings.

4. "Also would it be advisable to provide refereshments as was done last session, or should it be held without refreshments, or should a refreshment table be provided by contract, and require each person partaking of refreshment to pay for them, prices to be regulated by the Society?" The Society leaves this point to the decision of the A.M.S.

5. "Also the way in which invitations should be issued and as to their number?" The Senate leaves this point to the decision of the A.M.S. except in regard to the three following particulars (1) The invitations should be limited in number; (2) if a conversazione be decided upon, the invitations should be limited to six hundred; (3) two or three Professors should be on the Committee, and the list of invitations should be subject to their
