Soldiers / Margaret the damages but could not get it done & went to Town In the evening the Soldiers had taken my government horse & was going off with him the 4 Michigan I stop it. Margaret & Jacks Wife came from Lawrence County

Fri. 12 Scrimage / I went to Town News that Zessus Cotton Waggons in the Ten river was attacked by the Southerns Jack P got home from Cincinatiee did not see Billa.

Sat 13 News that Welles Emery & Jake Biffle was killed by the Fedrels after they had surrendered Greate excitement about it I was in Town

Sun 14 I stayed at home all day No particular news It has rained almost every day for a week The ground is wet enough

Mon. 15. I went to Town Many pressed Kizzers Cotton Wagons all got back safe

Augt. 1864 Tu 16th Emry & Biffle I went to Town Considerable talk & feeling about the killing of Emery & Biffle - there are fears of retaliation upon the prisoners I sent a permit & $40. by Bars Jordan to

Sugar / See Novr. 22 / Cedars / rain Nashville for 100 lbs of Sugar I have been trying to have a settlement with the contractor for Cutting & Carrying off my Cedars but has not got it effected yet. They dont want to pay any thing for it. It rained

Wed 17. rain I stayed at home all day It has been raining off & on all day, the ground is verry wet No particular news Our turnips are all come up too thick & with it many weeds

There a greate many roberies all over the Country, pecashes appes Watter Mellons rosten Ears &c are very plenty The Town is full

Th. 18 raid & Cotton Wagons / Thunder Storm Killing Jims Mare / Terable rain It rained last night and still raining this morning The raid that went with Kizzie to the Tennessee river robed & took Negroes & horses & Many other things from the time they went away until they came back they have done a greate many ridicolous things to the Citizens all along the rode- Shame.

The most terable thunder storm & rain Commencing about 1 1/2 oclock lasting siveral hours killing Jims Mare near the Spring belonging to Jim by lightening There was a greate many heavy peals of thunder striking all around quite alarming The rain is extreamly heavy & still raining all day quite a fresh

Margar m / W B Wilson / rain had sold out to McStratton. Bought for Margaret $13.80 goods She paid the Money . A heavy rain while in Town

Augt 1864 Sat. 20th Work/ / Anderson / Jack Patton &c / George Green & Anthony The morning is Cloudy It set in raining at 10 oclock The ground is a flood of Watter & the Cricks are swiming the river (D R) is very high There are nothing of any Consque doing All (off) at work except Saul Jack & Monk. Jack Patton & Anderson still getting Wood halling to Town. Green George & Anthony still working on the Fortifications. No news

Sun 21 Shed / rained I stayed at home all day The 5 Soldiers began to tear down my shed in the lower lott William & me stopt them They went off with there Wagons, half mad & we were not much better No Important News

Mon 22 rained / Moore I went to Town The meeting there nominated deligates to the Convention at Nashville to meet on

I got a letter from Moore the rail rode Contractor about our Cedars they have destroyed. See letter.

Tu 23 Moore / W J Porter / Self / Wm. I went to Town & answered Moores letter No particular news Came home early in the evening I see a letter from Wm J Porter to A. M. Hughes he wholy refuses any steps taken agt the people of Lawrence for the Gurillas burning his Cotton I have not been verry well all day Nothing new of a particular Character - William made Cider he is not well

-173Wed 24 Blacks / J B Crofford / Martha I am not verry well William has been unwell all week tho him & Margaret went to W B Wilson this morning It looks like rain a little. Our blacks this morning so far as I can learn are all well Jack Patton & Anderson is halling Wood. I see a letter from Sister Jane B Crofford from Memphis to Jno Mays She had lately got a letter from Lou Looney, Oxford in which she states that Wm D Mays is in the Armey Martha Jane & family is all well Jno Mays property is about to be Confiscated This information is from about 1st July 1864

1864 Augt Wed 24 Sugar / Dr Toler / Jordan I stayed at home all day I got a 100 Weight of Sugar Jordan got 21 bushels of Corn & Doct Toler got 21 bushels last Monday Morning at 1.00 pr bushel Jordan got on the 15 Inst 21 bushels of Corn

Thu 25. Soldiers killed / Marys horse I went to Town News, the Confedrates an Robers are taking horses some from W P Gant Ben Harlen & Maryann Websters In getting off with Marys horse they were followed & two George Sharp took Hays were both killed 1 1/2 miles from Maryanns on the Hampshire rode They (Fedrels) brought off Marys horse to Columbia I got it back & sent it to her, on Sat 27 Augt.

Frid 26 I went to Town Met Maryan there She seemed distressed about the affair of the killing to two that was taking the horses No particular news

-174Sat 27 fighting / Wm horse / Wm horse / Capturing / J W B Thomas / Saul / Abe I went to Town in the evening Some news in the papers with regard to our Armistic & the Charge Convention Some fighting in Virginia in which the Feds came out 2nd best I drove Williams horse yesterday & to day in my bugga he does verry well My Mule did not do so well & we put him in the Wagon. The Fedrels are plundering & taking horses &c near Calaoca They say they are the 5 Tennessee Cavalry Jas W B Thomas has got his filla back that had been taken by the Feds. Saul was pressed & kept in Town all day, Wed last. Abe was charged with stealing Jas Jones Mules sent off to the Armey as a Soldier, on Thursday 25 to Nashville. --

Sun 28 E. Bennet came last night The morning is clear & quite cool.

Mon 29th I went to Town Many people Circuit Court sitting The Chicago Convention Sets Some excitement.

1864 Augt Tu 30 Mary / Thomas / Misner / Gen Wheeler & Rody I went to Town Some excitement agt Mary in the neighborhood of Hampshire in consequence of the 2 Soldiers being run off & killed near there Thomas L was there at Columbia left & went back before I got to Town I receved Col Misners Complements through Jas Akens letter he wrote. Theres some excitement News that Genl Wheeler & Rodey is on the rode this way, the pickets are doubled Wheeler coming
