1864 Nov 9 Wed (1813. Talladega Battle 9th Novr) / fight at Johnsonville / Cars Mail / / Lynnville burned / Towns taken / Storm / Storm & rain / It has rained all night last night. Wind high from South & still showery this morning -

Yesterdays news that they were fighting at Johnsonsville The Confeds had sunck 2 Gun boats & 3 Transports & taken thousands of dollars worth of Government stores. The Cars has not been able to come since last Saturday No Male for near a week. Lynsville is said to be burned up Sunday night The The Confeds have taken all the Towns West of the Tennessee river except Memphis. I have stayed at home It has been raining & heavy Wind & storm nearly all day. The wind is changing to the West & some cooler, the Watter courses are becoming verry high -

Th 10 / Confeds took Johnsonville / I went to Town News that the Confeds took Johnsonville with many Government stores Mary was in Town she had been badly treated by the Fedrels Arnel Pillow and Tom Harris a bosting upon Lincons Election

Friday 11 / Jack / Election Went to Town No mail every kind of news Tolerable cold and raw day Jack has moved to Town It is pretty well understood that Lincon is Elected president.

Sat 12 / Stealing / Robing The 10th Ten regt with poor Government horses are passing on towards Columbia from the South stealing and robing every

/ & fight with 3 Soldiers / way they can particularly the Negroes They Robed Alfred serched Anderson & Jack Patton for Money I came home in the evening found one at Oteys Stable trying to get him I asked

Sat 12 Novr. / a fight with a Soldier / Hendrix his name from Polk County 40 Regt / Tennessean / There was 3 soldiers the other 2 left at the beginning of the fight / the man what he was doing he said he was going to take that horse I asked him if he had any authority to do so he said he had none but his gun I told him that was none but a robers authority & he could not take him He swore he would take him & me too. I dared him to interfear with the horse or me either he immedeatly Made at Me presenting his gun & coming up to the side of near the Bugga I was in, pointing his gun right at me I Jumped out of the Buga turned the Mussle off & took hold of the gun & him too. A scuffle insued & while in that possition he drew his pistol I caught it too Caleb bing in the Buga & I called on him to ketch hold of him & we took both pistol & gun from him he was bad used up by Anderson & others of the boys that he had a few Minnets before been robing I took him in my buga to the pickets Anderson & Monk went with me & I delivered him over to the pickets who sent him on & put him in Jail I got my hand badly cut by Anderson not intentionally in the fight My wound blead to town & back

/ Atalanta Burned up / Atalanta is reported burned up & Shears coming North & reported he is going South through Georgia

Sun 13 / To Town / I went to Town early in the morning the provost Frankaburger was drunk & nothing was done with the Soldier that I took to Town on last evening. No particular news that is reliable Quite cold weather

Mon 14 / Soldier Hendrix / Sent on to Nashville to be dealt with there / I went to Town Hendrix the Soldier that we had a fuss with Saturday was braught out of Jail I give in My evidence as detailed on Saturday. He was sent back to Jail No decission yet. It rained - slowly nearly all day Mudy & Sloppy I came home at one oclock They halled Wood (some) & killed a beef

Tu 15 / Corn / I stayed at home all day No news only preparing for a fight all round about I dont think it will take place (halled Corn)

Wed 16 I went to Town after dinner learning the command is about to leave We halled Corn until it rained

Th 17 / rained / I went to Town & tryed to get my filla back that I sold to Truett The news is the Confeds are across the river on this side in considerable fource

1864 Nov Fri 18 I went to Town found the command 7th Penn Cavalry all mooving off North Col Sipes having resigned his commission give up his place to Col McCoy of the & Majr Frankaburger

Col Sipes / Maj Frankaburger leaving Col McCoy Commission / filly / the provost give up his place to It has rained all day & with some difficulty I got My Gray filly back & Saul rode her home, her legs badly swelled

Sat 19. / Ester Wagon found / Bay Mare lost / rain / sore hand / I stayed at home all day & it has rained all day. Thomas Ester had his 2 horse Wagon stolen last night he tracked it in & through my wood lott & into Rankins Woods lott & found it under a bank of straw in Rankins lott & carried it back home Weaned the little bay Mare lost on yesterday We are doing nothing it has rained every day or night & some times both all this week. My hand that I got cut last Saturday the 12 I think is better but verry painfull

Sun 20th Novr. / rain / Weaned colt / apples / Wm. / Martha / It rained nearly all night The country is in a flood of Watter No news this morning yet heard, every thing appears quiet calm No wind. We have weaned our bay Danrico Mare Rockimar fillas Colt to day. We divided out apples with all our blacks, all got some. William was quite unwell all night better this morning (his back) We have heard nothing from Martha Jane so long I fear when we hear there will be some thing that will be mortifying to us O if she & her family was only here to share with us & us with her in Our day of Trouble, it would be a greate gratification for us to be all together O will that time ever come that we will ever get to gather & the Country once more in peace. What would I give yes all I have to effect it but

1864 Novr Mon 21 / Cold & snow / pork / Cold / Thomas Martin &c arrested / It has been drisiling rain all night last night, this morning before day the clouds shifted to the North & West & turned quite cold and commenced Snowing about sun rise At 8 oclock the snow is coming from the North & the ground quite covered with Snow. We are trying to kill a few hogs & get Wood My hand is paining me verry much this morning tho it is I think healing. Saul went to Town braught the Jornal No particular new in it It is verry cold I learn that Jas H Thomas Wm S Fleming Barkley Martin L D Myers & Squire Frierson were arrested & sent to Nashville Cause not known they are all released

Tu 22 / Snow / Camps / Cold / Sherman It is extreamly Cold this morning Snow on the ground wind high & from the North. A greate many Wagons & Camps at the forks of the rode this side of Town burning up the fences What little are left. Hard work to get wood the little Negroes I fear will suffer Greate excitement with regard to Genl Shermans operations in the South & some peace prospects are entertained tho I fear
