distress amongst the families

Mon 3rd Oct Oct Several of our neighbors have came in for news Nothing so bad as our boys leaving & going to the Armey - There is no passing too & from Town and dangerous to pass through the Country any way Several Confeds & Feds were killed some 2 or 3 on each side

Tu 4h 4. / Gen Reausaw / Forrest / Reusaw / West Due N Due / I went to Town Genl Reusau with his Cavalry passed through Town after Forrest he Forrest having left Mt pleasant yesterday morning on his way (Monday) South West Russaw has some 3 or 4 thousand Cavalry, another fource of Fedrels stayed last night at bigbyville Som 5000 after Forrest. Genl Thomas from the front with 30,000 men is after Forrest thinks they will kitch him about Tennessee River It rained verry heavy at one oclock. West Due & Newton Due went off with the Confeds last night. With many others.

Wed 5th / Rusaw / There are no news every thing is calm waiting the return of Genl Ruseau from South. It rained all night last night & all day until evening verry hard

1864 Octr Th 6 / Wool / Shirting / Mag / The morning is beautiful & clear after so much rain It is verry calm no news from the night. I took a bag of Mixed Wool to Ashtons (16 1/2 lbs mixed black red & white) Carting Mashine. I bought 22 yds of Shirting $1.00 pr yd 4 1/2 yds of Irish linnen at $1.50 pr yd & spools of thred $1.00 Total $29.75 Do the Next day 6 yds of Irish linnen for Margaret £1.50

Friday 7. / fighting / I went to Town it has turned cooler News of fighting at Richmond greate slaughter Also fighting in Shurmans rear & the rode & bridges &c cut & burned Genl Buford crossed over the Tennessee river with a large Wagon train of provisions Nothing definit heard from Forrest & Reausaw since they left

Sat. 8. / A O Williams / Wool / Jack A greate many reports of Forrest & Rusaw nothing certain I took the ballance of our Wool to Ashtons lbs it is to be carded in 2 Weeks Jack & his Wife and A. O. Williams stayed to night

Sun 9 This morning is quite cool & a tolerable heavy frost (the 1st this fall) A. O. Williams went home this morning No particular news

Mon 10 / Forrest &c / Election / Hughs Mayes &c I went to Town There was a verry grate many Citizens in Town No Certanty from the Combattants that are South Forrest Rousaw & others different reports contradictory Maryann & Thomas were both in Town Some excitement about the President Election Hughs Jno mayes Jno Beard & Ben Frierson were verry insulting & I have been trying every way to keep silent It is verry hard to do & receve there insults

Tu 11 /Wilson / Apples / I went to Town after dinner give W. B. Wilson a letter to Judge J. C. Walker recommending him to Circuit Court Clerk I have gathered a pretty chance of Apples

Wed 12 / Croxton / I started to Town was met by a force of Genl Croxtons Command & come back they came here but done no harm they were verry insolent I went to Town in Evening

1864 Th 13 Octr / Citizens / I went to Town in the evening a good dear of Confusion Rousaws Command (a part) came back to the fair grounds Not much reliable news All confusion Pressing the Negroes taking horses & trying to breake the Citizens up & lay the lands in Waist Some of our own Citizens ingaged in the destruction of property (J. B.) (J. M.) (B. F.) (W. H. P.) giving all the aid to the persecutors in there power

Fri 14 / leather / I went to Bigbyville (Sent Hides) (Tanyard) Bought 204 lbs of Bacon $41.00 of Mrs Cole Easter & brought home 3 sides of upper leather Sandford went with me took the cart & six verry fine beef hides to the Tanners Mr. Moores.

Sat 15 / A. O. Williams / I went to Town A. O. Williams stayed with me last night & went on to Nashville this morning No verry particular news Rousaus troops going back towards Nashville

Sun 16 / Thomas / Thomas I. Porter came after dinner he had lost his Mare last night I started with him to Town but Genl Rousaw troops passing in the rode to Town We turned back & Thomas went home

Mon. 17 / Thomas / I went to Town took Saul with me. Jack & Saul got in the buga & hunted Thomas Mare until 12 oclock Then Gust Lamum went with Thomas & late in the evening found her Thomas went to W. B. Wilson & stayed all night Nothing particular news

Tu 18th / Lincoln / Battle / I went to Town No particular news The President Election is creating some interest Gov Johnsons procamation is Condemed by all except the Abolutions A committee waited on the President asking a revision and alteration of the Johnson Oath has agreed to answer them in writing Very interesting news Expectation of a battle in the front

1864 Octr Wed. 19 / Distruction of property / I went to Town took Mrs Kirk with me she having stayed all night last night She is the wife of William P Kirk of Lawrence County. Green has been at home some week or ten days being verry unwell. Went to Town & back to B Martins last night The Dispatch reports a greate destruction of property in Verginia by Sheriden Millions of dollars

Thurs 20 / Mary / I went to Town News of verry heavy fighting in Virginia Sheridens Victory Mary was in Town all was well No particular news Roomers Contradictory every way

Frid 21 / Cedars / Brown / Matthews Young / I went to Town, The Fedrels are foraging all round taking every thing from the people Greate trouble all round they Wagoners are halling all our Cedar Timber Dan Brown & his Son is verry insulting a halling the Cedars William Matthews & Jim Young has swapt back there poneys with me With Margaret give my brand horse for a rue bargan bargan

Sat 22 / Dan Brown Cedars / Stealing / Trouble / River of fire / I went to Town & brought Jacks Wife home with me at night Jack being gone to Cincinatta No particular news rumors that Forrest is on his way back to Columbia not believed Old Dan Brown is threatening me & others for dicenting to his stealing our Cedar timber he will ketch it if he dont look sharp from some of the neighbours There is greate trouble in the Country Stealing horses Mules hogs breaking open Smoke house stealing meat &c Verry insulting & imposing on every body encouraging Negroes to steal & do every manner of rascality Nothing safe no help for our unfortunate Condition I wish there was a river of fire between the North & South that would burn with unquentiable fury for ever more & that it could never be passed to the endless ages of eternity by any living creature. After peace will any Abolition ever dare find his way back to this Digings

1864 Sun Oct 23rd The morning is clear Cool with frost. I have not been verry well through the night (it is cold) head ake pain in my bones &c. I stayed at home all day No particular news
