Camp of Light Artillery Company on Sous 18 Miles from Ringold Barracks

December 12th 1862.

Major E. F. Gray A A A Genl.

Sir. Permit me to call Your attention and through you the attention of the Gen. commanding to the sad and deplorable condition of the horses of Maclins Light Battery, which, I regret to state is dying with starvation.

Having received no corn for the last six weeks and sometimes no hay consequently they have to live on what grass they can pick, which is unnecessary to tell is very scarce at this season of the year; so that the horses are reduced to such low condition, as being entirely unfit for the public service at present.

During the passed week five horses dropped down in the field with weakness and, I am sorry to say, to rise no more; a good more will follow the same fate unless timely aid is provided for them.

I have waited with the utmost impatience for some time past in vain expectation of receiving some corn at the Head Quarters, but as having received none yet nor any prospect of getting any, I deem it my duty to make this statement, expecting that you will cause some steps to be taken without delay to save the public animals under my charge of dying of hunger. The Battery consists of 4 12 Pdrs Guns and 2 6 Pdr Guns with caissons, ammunition complete and all the necessary equipments for field service together with some ninety men and 104 horses. Trusting to be excused for addressing You with these few lines I am very respectfully Your obedt servt

(Sig) P. Fox Capt Cmdg Battery.

Head Quarters Ringgold Barracks Texas Novr 24th 1862

Sir. Enclosed herewith is a petition from Several Members of this Company requesting one Sergeant Bennett to be appointed first Sergt of this Company.

The Sergeant acting as First Sergt at present is Senior to Bennett and has been in the company from the commencement he has done his duty at all times faithfully and trustfully according to my directions consequently I should not have done my duty honestly if I would appoint a Junior in rank over him.

After minutely inquiring who were the originators or leaders of said petition I learn that one Sergeant Keenan and Corporals Myers & Farrar were the aiders and abettors of the same and that several of the men signed it through fear and others did not know what they were doing. In order to check the like influence and not allow any dictation on the part of the Men I Respectfully reccomend and solicit that you name Sergeant Keenan and Corporals Myers and Farrar to the Ranks as Privates

Very Respectfully, Your Obedt Serv't P. Fox Capt Comdg Lt Arty Co.

fourth the weight of the Ball in powder, threw the balls only 1350 feet instead of 1500 feet as required. Moreover we find from information of Capt P. Fox and Lieut A. E. Dege, that the powder was originally issued to Capt Fox by Major Maclin at San Antonio, Texas as blank cartridge for practising purposes and that Capt. P. Fox getting some of his fixed Amm'n damaged at Fort Brown Texas refixed said Ammunition Substituting this inferior powder and not quite one pound for a Charge for six pounder brass gun.

We, therefore recommend that the powder in said cartridges be appropriated to their original purposes of being used as blank cartridge and that the projectiles be turned over to the Ordnance Officer.
